Biography

Joni Ernst is a Republican senator representing Iowa, serving in the United States Senate since 2015. Born on July 1, 1970, in Montgomery County, Iowa, she is a graduate of Iowa State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts. Prior to her political career, Ernst had a distinguished military service in the U.S. Army Reserve and Iowa Army National Guard, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. This military background informs her policy perspectives, particularly in areas related to national defense and veterans' affairs.

Senator Ernst serves on several Senate committees, including the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Committee on Environment and Public Works, and the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Her involvement in these committees reflects her commitment to veteran issues, environmental protection, and support for small businesses.

Throughout her legislative career, Senator Ernst has sponsored and co-sponsored numerous bills that align with her conservative values. Noteworthy among these is the Judicial Relief Clarification Act of 2025 (SB1206), which proposes to limit the issuance of national injunctions in federal court. This bill emphasizes strengthening local judicial authority and reducing what some see as federal overreach in judicial matters. The bill has generated discussion regarding access to justice, particularly for vulnerable populations who may rely on broader injunctions for protection.

Additionally, she sponsored the Aid Accountability Act of 2025 (SB1340), which has been referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations. This act aims to ensure accountability in foreign aid disbursements, an issue that resonates with her constituents concerned about government transparency and efficiency.

In a show of bipartisan support, Ernst also co-sponsored the NATIONAL Women in Agriculture Day Act (SR153), which recognizes the contributions of women in agriculture, reflecting her advocacy for both agricultural interests and gender equality.

As part of her commitment to addressing the pressing crisis of opioid addiction, she co-sponsored the HALT Fentanyl Act (SB331), which seeks to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs. This legislation aims to decrease the availability of these substances and enhance law enforcement’s ability to combat drug trafficking.

Ernst’s legislative actions suggest a strong alignment with conservative policies focusing on national security, judicial reform, and public health. Her approach to governance often advocates for limited federal government involvement, particularly in judicial matters, and emphasizes accountability in federal spending.

On a personal level, Senator Ernst resides in Red Oak, Iowa. She has been open about her life experiences, including her upbringing on a farm, which shapes her perspectives on agricultural policies. Ernst is divorced and has one daughter, including this familial context as a crucial aspect of her public identity.
