State Representative Brad Buckley represents House District 54 in Texas, covering parts of Bell County. A native of Killeen, he has served in the Texas House since November 2018, having garnered recognition as the Texas House Republican Caucus's Freshman of the Year during his initial term. Buckley chairs the House Public Education Committee, which oversees legislation affecting educational policies and the welfare of Texas' 5.5 million schoolchildren and their families. In addition to this role, he serves on the House Land and Resource Management Committee and the Select Committee on Educational Opportunity and Enrichment.
Buckley holds both a bachelor's degree and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University, graduating in 1989 and 1993, respectively. Upon completing his education, he returned to his hometown to establish a veterinary practice that has served local families and their pets since 1994. His professional background is complemented by his deep community involvement; he served on the Killeen Independent School District Board and was chairman of the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce. Currently, he is vice-chair of 14Forward, an initiative focused on economic growth for the Greater Fort Hood area.
On a personal note, Buckley is married to Dr. Susan Buckley, an assistant superintendent for secondary schools within the Killeen ISD. They have three children—Emily, Erin, and Bo—all of whom are Texas A&M alumni. The couple is also proud grandparents, enjoying life on their ranch in Salado where they maintain a cow-calf operation and train western performance horses.
Representative Buckley’s legislative actions reveal a commitment to supporting various educational initiatives and healthcare policies. He has co-authored House Bill 300, aimed at exempting essential family care items, including diapers and feminine hygiene products, from sales tax. This bill, which has gained significant bipartisan support, addresses issues of economic justice by alleviating financial burdens on low-income families.
Another notable legislative effort includes House Bill 25, which proposes a framework for the importation of affordable prescription drugs from Canada, seeking to ease the financial strain on families regarding high medication costs. The support for this bill reflects an alignment with healthcare advocates emphasizing affordability.
Buckley has also expressed dedication to educational recognition, sponsoring various resolutions, including tributes to local educators and community figures who have positively impacted the region. For example, he co-sponsored House Resolution 1558, honoring the legacy of U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) James Edward Seigman, acknowledging contributions to both military and education.
Through his membership in committees focused on public education, land management, and local calendars, Buckley promotes advancements responsive to community needs. His active engagement in these issues positions him as a pivotal figure within Texas politics, navigating complex topics such as educational reform, healthcare accessibility, and community welfare. As an advocate for both local and statewide priorities, he continues to reflect Republican values while addressing pressing public issues that resonate with many constituents in his district.
