Born on October 24, 1954, in Los Angeles, California, this politician graduated from Corona del Mar High School in Newport, California, in 1971. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1974 and a Juris Doctor from Harvard University in 1979. Before entering politics, he practiced law and was a certified public accountant. From 1990 to 1995, he served on the California State Board of Equalization, eventually becoming its chair. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1997 as a member of the Democratic Party and has been re-elected for 14 consecutive terms since then.
