Biography

A veteran of public service, this member of the United States Senate has deep roots in Michigan, where they were born on April 29, 1950, in Gladwin. After completing their education, including a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1972 and a Master of Social Work magna cum laude also from Michigan State in 1975, they embarked on a career in social work and leadership consulting. Their political career began as an Ingham County commissioner from 1975 to 1978, followed by a tenure in the Michigan State House of Representatives from 1979 to 1990, and then in the Michigan State Senate from 1991 to 1994.

Elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1996, they served until 2001, when they were elected to the U.S. Senate. They have since won multiple re-elections, serving as a Senator from January 3, 2001, until January 3, 2025. Throughout their time in Congress, they have held significant leadership roles, including acting as the Democratic Conference Secretary and chairing the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

Currently, they serve on several key committees, notably the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, where they have emphasized policies related to food security and nutrition. Their leadership in the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee is critical for shaping the party's messaging and legislative strategies.

In terms of significant legislative contributions, this Senator has sponsored and co-sponsored numerous bills targeting issues such as health care affordability, maternal health, and government ethics. One notable bill they co-sponsored is the Improving Health Insurance Affordability Act of 2023, which aims to enhance the affordability of health insurance for American families by expanding tax credits and cost-sharing subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. They have also advocated for the BLACK Maternal Health Momnibus Act, aimed at addressing disparities in maternal health outcomes, particularly among Black women.

Their support for ethics and accountability in government is evident in their co-sponsorship of the Ending Trading and Holdings in Congressional Stocks (ETHICS) Act, which seeks to prohibit members of Congress from holding or trading stocks to avoid conflicts of interest.
