Biography

Born on August 25, 1967, in Royal Oak, Michigan, the Senator from Ohio graduated from Montpelier High School in Ohio in 1985. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1989 and a Master of Arts in Communications in 1992, both from the University of Dayton. Before his political career, he served as the vice president for economic development at the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce. His political journey began as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2001 to 2009, where he attained the position of Speaker of the House (2005-2009). Following that, he served in the Ohio State Senate and was then elected as Ohio's Secretary of State from 2011 to 2019. His tenure also includes serving as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio from 2019 until his appointment to the U.S. Senate in January 2025 to fill a vacancy.
