Biography

A member of the United States Congress representing North Dakota, this politician was born in Dickinson on October 8, 1976. He graduated from Dickinson High School in 1995 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Dakota in 2001, followed by a Juris Doctor degree from the same institution in 2003. His professional background encompasses work as a lawyer and business executive. He served in the North Dakota State Senate from 2013 until 2018 and held the position of chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party between 2015 and 2018. Subsequently, he was elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Sixteenth Congress and has continued serving through the current session.

In addition to his congressional duties, this member was appointed as Governor of North Dakota in 2024. His legislative focus has been notably active, with sponsorship and co-sponsorship of several significant bills aimed at addressing varied issues.

He has taken part in notable legislation such as the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 (HB82) which proposes the elimination of provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals who receive pensions from state or local governments. This bill, which has become public law, reflects a focus on improving retiree benefits while noting potential discussions regarding its financial implications on the Social Security Trust Fund. His legislative activities also intersect with healthcare topics, as seen in the Medicare Orthotics and Prosthetics Patient-Centered Care Act (HB4315), which aims to enhance patient care standards within Medicare.

Additionally, he has co-sponsored the Stopping Home Office Work's Unproductive Problems Act of 2023 (SHOW UP Act) (HB139) that seeks to revert telework policies of federal agencies back to what was in place before the COVID-19 pandemic. This bill highlights a prioritization of traditional in-office work arrangements over flexible teleworking options. Another significant bill in which he has been involved is the Close the Double Subsidy Loophole for Electric Vehicles Act (HB327), which aims to adjust tax credits for electric vehicles based on state subsidies, indicating an interest in fiscal controls within environmental policy contexts.

His co-sponsorship of the Promoting Domestic Energy Production Act (HB5073) underscores his support for energy independence and domestic production initiatives. His legislative focus appears to reflect a conservative alignment, advocating for traditional fiscal policies, national security, and veering towards less federal intervention in local matters.

Understanding his political leanings further, his support for measures such as the FEND Off Fentanyl Act (HB3333) and the No Paydays for Hostage-Takers Act (HB5826), it becomes evident that he holds a strong stance against illicit drug trade and terrorism. Overall, his initiatives and sponsored bills demonstrate a focus on both enhancing social welfare for retirees and maintaining strict security measures against threats domestic and foreign.
