Biography

Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst, a sixth-generation Texan, has a rich ancestral history linked to the Texas War of Independence. Raised in Brenham, Texas, she developed a strong foundation in family values and work ethic from a young age, influenced by her father's service in WWII and his career as a dentist and rancher. After completing her education at Texas Christian University, where she excelled in athletics as a member of the golf team, Kolkhorst and her husband, Jim, navigated multiple small business ventures in their hometown.

Kolkhorst's political journey began with her election to the Texas House of Representatives in 2001. After serving seven terms, she transitioned to the Texas Senate through a special election in 2014. As a senator, she represents nearly one million constituents across a district that encompasses parts of 18 counties, including a segment of the Texas coastline. Kolkhorst is known for her dedication to her constituents and her proactive approach to addressing their needs.

In her role as the Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, Kolkhorst has been instrumental in shaping health policies, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
