Biography

Born on March 13, 1971, in Sabina, Clinton County, Ohio, this member of Congress graduated from East Clinton High School in 1989 and went on to earn an A.S. from the Marion Military Institute and a B.A. from Ohio State University in 1993. Following a decade of service in the United States Army Reserve from 1989 to 1999, they began their career in public service, working as a staff member for Ohio State Senator Merle Grace Kearns and later for U.S. Representative Robert William Ney from 1995 to 1998. Before entering national politics, they were a professional advocate and business executive. Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Seventeenth Congress in a special election to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Steve Stivers, they have since been reelected to the two succeeding Congresses, beginning their current term on November 2, 2021.

As a member of Congress, they have actively participated in several key committees and have taken part in significant legislative initiatives. Notably, they co-sponsored the Mandating Exclusive Review of Individual Treatments (MERIT) Act (HB133), which was placed on the Union Calendar, indicating it received substantial traction within the legislative process. This legislation aims to amend Medicare's coverage determination process by requiring individual assessments for drugs and biologics, potentially influencing treatment accessibility and personalization within the healthcare system.

Additionally, they have co-sponsored various bills focused on energy and fiscal responsibility, such as the Clean Energy Demonstration Transparency Act of 2025 (HB1453), which calls for enhanced reporting on clean energy projects, and the Credit for Caring Act (HB2036), aimed at financial support for caregivers. Such initiatives reflect a focus on family support and energy policy, aligning with broader Republican priorities.

Their legislative endeavors also extend into education with the National STEM Week Act (HB2104) and welfare transparency like the Improve Transparency and Stability for Families and Children Act (HB2359). The latter seeks to enforce more stringent deadlines for fund usage in state welfare programs, emphasizing accountability at the state level.

This member's political leaning can be defined as supportive of both individualism within healthcare and fiscal conservatism, aligning with the Republican platform that prioritizes treatment accessibility tailored to individual needs, while also emphasizing reduced regulatory burdens on businesses and efficiency in government programs. This approach is further evidenced by their support for legislation that requires a practical balance between resource allocation and regulatory flexibility.

Overall, this member maintains a focus on improving healthcare systems, supporting families, and advocating for energy policy, continuously engaging in legislative discussions that reflect their commitment to the constituents they represent in Ohio.
