RANGLIN Introduced By: Representatives Shekarchi, Blazejewski, Donovan, Fogarty, Chippendale, Cortvriend, O'Brien, Costantino, Spears, and Fellela Date Introduced: January 05, 2023 Referred To: House read and passed WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Valrie 1 Ranglin. Born in Jamaica, West Indies, she was the daughter of the late Eric George Ranglin and 2 Mavis Estriana Ranglin; and 3 WHEREAS, From an early age, Ms. Ranglin was taught the value of education from her 4 parents. She was a precocious reader as a youngster who loved books and could read and write 5 proficiently even before she entered pre-school; and 6 WHEREAS, Ms. Ranglin attended Bull Bay All Age School and Morant Bay High 7 School where she excelled as a student. After High School, she attended Micro Teachers' College, 8 graduating with high honors with a degree in Library Studies, and later attended the University of 9 West Indies and earned a Bachelor's degree in Education; and 10 WHEREAS, Ms. Ranglin became one of the first youngsters from her neighborhood to 11 attend high school or college and only the second person in her district to become a college 12 trained teacher. Together with her brother Lloyd, she founded the Golden Dragon Youth Club, a 13 community organization dedicated to serving children; and 14 WHEREAS, Valrie Ranglin began her distinguished public service career as a Library 15 Assistant at the Supreme Court in Jamaica. Deciding that her calling was to serve as a teacher, 16 she soon accepted a position with the Trinityville High School in St. Thomas, Jamaica, and later 17 accepted a position with the Windward Road All Age School, followed by a position at 18 Camperdown High School; and 19 WHEREAS, In 1970, Ms. Ranglin moved to Rhode Island, and worked at the Spiegel 20 LC000302 - Page 2 of 2 Jewelry Factory in Providence. Shortly thereafter, she accepted a job with the Urban League of 1 Rhode Island, teaching GED classes at the Welcome Arnold Shelter; and 2 WHEREAS, In 2006. Ms. Ranglin accepted a position with the Providence Public School 3 System, teaching at the Roger Williams School, a position she held for fifteen years before 4 moving on to teach at Central High School until her passing. As a teacher, she was highly 5 respected and beloved by her peers, students and their parents. She was always willing to do more 6 and accept additional responsibilities in order to further student growth. She was selected to serve 7 as the New Teacher Ambassador at Central High School where she mentored new teachers, and 8 also served as the Instructional Team Leader for the English Language Arts Department at 9 Central High School; and 10 WHEREAS, Ms. Ranglin was a woman of deep faith and a devoted mother to her sons, 11 Kadeem and Rexroy. She read the Bible to them daily and taught them to live their lives with 12 dignity. She was also politically active and a Justice seeker for people not sharing in the bounty of 13 American life; and 14 WHEREAS, Ms. Ranglin was also the proud grandmother of two granddaughters, 15 Destiny and Genesis, and the beloved sister of Pearline, Lloyd, Burchell, the Honorable Marcia 16 Ranglin-Vassell, Basil, Donovan, Desmond and Lisa; now, therefore be it 17 RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 18 extends its deepest condolences to the Ranglin Family on the passing of Valrie V. Ranglin; and 19 be it further 20 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to send 21 duly certified copies of this resolution to Kadeem Ranglin, Rexroy Ranglin, the Honorable 22 Marcia Ranglin-Vassel, and Family. 23 ======== LC000302 ========
