PROCLAIMING JANUARY 23-29, 2023, TO BE "CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE 
ANESTHETISTS WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, The week of January 23-29, 2023, has been designed as "National CRNA 1 
Week"; and 2 
WHEREAS, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are advanced practice 3 
registered nurses. Providing anesthesia care to patients in the United States for more than 150 4 
years, CRNAs are among the nation's most trusted professions; and 5 
WHEREAS, Legislation passed by Congress in 1986 made nurse anesthetists the first 6 
nursing specialty to be accorded direct reimbursement rights by Medicare; and 7 
WHEREAS, CRNAs are primary anesthesia providers in rural communities and continue 8 
to be the primary providers of anesthesia care to U.S. military personnel; and 9 
WHEREAS, CRNAs practice in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered, from 10 
traditional hospital surgical suites and obstetrical delivery rooms to critical access hospitals; from 11 
ambulatory surgical centers to the offices of dentists, podiatrists, ophthalmologists, pain 12 
managements specialists and more; and 13 
WHEREAS, CRNAs are qualified to make independent judgments regarding all aspects 14 
of anesthesia care based on their education, training, and licensure; and 15 
WHEREAS, CRNAs are trusted anesthesia experts on the frontlines, caring for patients 16 
safely and compassionately, delivering specialized, cost-effective care to all patients from 17 
newborns to seniors, and for every type of procedure in all types of facilities; and 18 
WHEREAS, CRNAs are courageously serving on the frontlines of the ongoing 19

coronavirus pandemic, using their advanced skills in airway management, intubation and 1 
ventilator management to care for the sickest patients, and leaving their homes and families to 2 
travel to hospitals and facilities across the country, so they can assist where the need is greatest; 3 
now, therefore be it 4 
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 5 
proclaims January 23-29, 2023, to be Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists Week" in Rhode 6 
Island and furthermore recognizes the importance of the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists 7 
and their role in providing high-quality care for the public; and be it further  8 
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 9 
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Association of Nurse 10 
Anesthetists (RIANA). 11
