RELATING TO HIGHWAYS - RHODE ISLAND TURNPIKE AND BRIDGE AUTHORITY

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:
SECTION 1. Chapter 24-12 of the General Laws entitled "Rhode Island Turnpike and 1
Bridge Authority” is hereby amended to add the following section: 2
24-12-60. Safety barrier on bridges. 3
The Rhode Island turnpike and bridge authority (RITBA) is hereby directed to design a 4
safety barrier and/or safety netting on the Mount Hope Bridge, the Claiborne Pell Bridge, and the 5
Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge. The design of the safety barrier or netting shall commence and be 6
reported to the house finance committee and senate finance committee no later than January 1, 2024 7
with construction to commence no later than June 30, 2024. 8
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. 9

This act would mandate the Rhode Island turnpike and bridge authority (RITBA) to design 1
a safety barrier or netting system on the Mount Hope Bridge, the Claiborne Pell Bridge, and the 2
Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge by January 1, 2024, with construction commencing no later than 3
June 30, 2024. 4
This act would take effect upon passage. 5
