THE RHODE ISLAND STATE HOUSE AND CONGRAT ULATING HIM FOR TAKING
HOME THE GOLD AT THE 65TH ANNUAL GRAMMY A WARDS

WHEREAS, Douglas Brinkley is a Professor of History and the Katherine Tsanoff 1
Brown Chair in Humanities at Rice University. He is also a renowned author and two-time 2
Grammy Award winner; and 3
WHEREAS, On Thursday, January 26th, Douglas Brinkley was welcomed and 4
recognized by the House Chamber for his innumerable achievements and informative discussions 5
with House members; and 6
WHEREAS, On February 5th of 2023 at the 65th annual Grammy Awards, Mr. Brinkley 7
took home the gold in the Best Latin Jazz Album category for his work co-producing “Fandango 8
At The Wall In New York” by Arturo O’Farrill and The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, featuring the 9
Conga Patria Son Jarocho Collective. In 2017, he won his first Grammy in the Best Large Jazz 10
Ensemble Album category for “Presidential Suite: Eight Variations on Freedom”; and 11
WHEREAS, In addition to his Grammys, Mr. Brinkley is an acclaimed best-selling 12
author of more than thirty books including “The Rosa Parks Story”, “Going Upriver”, "Tour of 13
Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War", “The Vatican Revealed”, “The Unfinished Presidency: 14
Jimmy Carter's Journey Beyond the White House”, “Gerald R. Ford”, “The Great Deluge: 15
Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast” that received the Robert F. 16
Kennedy Book Award, and recently, “Cronkite” which won the Sperber Prize; and 17
WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Brinkley is the official U.S. Presidential Historian, served 18
as Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Center for American Civilization, is a history commentator 19

for CBS News and a contributing editor to the magazines "Vanity Fair" and "American Heritage"; 1
and 2
WHEREAS, For all his merited accomplishments, Douglas Brinkley is truly an 3
inspiration to us all and he is eminently worthy of our praise and acknowledgement; now, 4
therefore be it 5
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 6
heartily congratulates Douglas Brinkley for his most recent Grammy Award and his innumerable 7
literary achievements. We moreover extend best wishes for his continued success, happiness and 8
good health; and be it further 9
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 10
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Douglas Brinkley. 11
