2023 -- H 6361 ======== LC002929 ======== S T A T E O F R H O D E I S L A N D IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2023 ____________ H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N EXTENDING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF DOROTHY SHIRLEY KRAUSS LICHT Introduced By: Representatives Kislak, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, Chippendale, Corvese, McNamara, Ackerman, Ajello, McGaw, and Fellela Date Introduced: May 04, 2023 Referred To: House read and passed WHEREAS, It is with sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Dorothy 1 Licht, beloved and devoted wife of the late former Governor Frank Licht for forty-seven years; 2 and 3 WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of the City of Providence, Dotty, as she was 4 affectionately known by family and friends, was the daughter of Ralph and Bessie Krauss, and 5 the mother of three daughters, Carol Kanin and her husband, Dennis, Judy Licht and her husband, 6 Richard Tempchin, and the late Beth Laramee; and 7 WHEREAS, Mrs. Licht was 101 at her passing which had given her the time to enjoy the 8 births of her eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Laramee, Lesley McClellan and her husband Michael, 9 Zachary Kanin and his wife Christina Angelides, Jonah Kanin and his wife Michelle Shwarzstein, 10 Franklin Kanin and his partner Lauren Biwer, Marlene Tempchin, Jacob Tempchin and his wife, 11 Hayley Brooks and Adam Tempchin, and her five great-grandchildren, Elodie, Max, Sammy, Zoe 12 and Ari; and 13 WHEREAS, A devoted and supportive wife throughout her husband’s political career, 14 Mrs. Licht was an encouraging helpmate and trustworthy advisor throughout the years her 15 husband served as a State Senator, a Superior Court Judge, and in her role as First Lady during 16 his years as Governor, and had served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. After 17 his passing, she started the Licht Lecture Series at Brown University in his honor; and 18 WHEREAS, Mrs. Licht’s dedicated efforts with the Rhode Island Community Food 19 LC002929 - Page 2 of 2 Bank, where she served as a Board member, Honorary Board member, and a loyal donor, were 1 wholeheartedly commendable, but were only a small portion of a life that included a panoply of 2 community endeavors. Her benevolence also included involvement with the Rhode Island State 3 Council on the Arts, RISD, the New England Foundation for the Arts, and the Rhode Island 4 Philharmonic; and 5 WHEREAS, Multi-faceted, Mrs. Licht was first and foremost devoted to her family and 6 her altruistic endeavors. She was also a bright no-nonsense woman who had graduated from 7 Wellesley College, was a fabulous pie and blintz maker, and was passionate about the news from 8 any and every source; and 9 WHEREAS, Dorothy Licht possessed a sincere sense of empathy for the plight of 10 vulnerable neighbors and Rhode Islanders, and her generosity, and warm and funny personality 11 enriched the lives of all who knew her and set a standard for philanthropy that is an inspiration to 12 us all; now, therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 14 extends deepest condolences on the passing of Dorothy Licht. May her memory be a blessing; 15 and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 17 transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Carol Kanin and Family, and Judy Licht and 18 Family. 19 ======== LC002929 ========
