H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N 
HONORING STEVEN CONTENTE, BRISTOL TOWN ADMINISTRATOR, ON BEING 
NAMED THE CHIEF MARS HAL OF THE 2023 BRISTOL FOURTH OF JULY 
CELEBRATION

WHEREAS, The Bristol, Fourth of July Celebration was founded in 1785, and is the 1 
oldest such celebration in the United States; and 2 
WHEREAS, Beginning in 1826, Chief Marshals have been chosen annually. This high 3 
honor has always been bestowed on Bristol residents who have given their time in service to the 4 
community. It is therefore fitting that Steven Contente has been chosen as the 238th Chief 5 
Marshall of the Bristol 4th of July celebrations; and 6 
WHEREAS, Steven Contente, the current Town Administrator in Bristol, was born and 7 
raised in Bristol, one of four brothers born to Barbara and Leo Contente, Sr. A hard worker all of 8 
his life, Mr. Contente worked as a carpenter, quahogger, fireman and seasonal DEM employee 9 
before finding his true calling as a police officer; and 10 
WHEREAS, Mr. Contente joined the Bristol Police Department and during his 11 
distinguished twenty-year career was widely admired and respected by his peers and superiors for 12 
his tireless work ethic, deep love for his community, and the great instincts and acumen he 13 
exhibited while conducting his duties. Thanks to these qualities and his superb leadership skills, 14 
he rose to the rank of Deputy Chief before retiring; and 15 
WHEREAS, After retiring from the Bristol Police Department, Mr. Contente worked in 16 
construction for a while before deciding in 2016 to run for Town Administrator, an election he 17 
won. He has earned wide praise during his tenure as Bristol Town Administrator, particularly for 18 
working well with others and for being "open and willing to learn from those around him"; and 19

WHEREAS, First and foremost in Mr. Contente’s life has always been his family. He is 1 
the beloved husband of Kristen and devoted father of Alaina, Levi and Matthew; now, therefore 2 
be it 3 
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 4 
congratulates Bristol Town Administrator Steven Contente on being named Chief Marshal of the 5 
2023 Bristol, Rhode Island, Fourth of July Celebration; and be it further 6 
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 7 
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Steven Contente, Bristol Town 8 
Administrator.  9
