Gallo Date Introduced: March 07, 2023 Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration WHEREAS, In beautiful and myriad ways, the arts enhance and enrich the lives of every 1 Rhode Islander; and 2 WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island has clear evidence that the arts contribute 3 significantly to our quality of life, the education of our citizens, and the economy of our State; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, The arts strengthen the Rhode Island economy by generating approximately 6 $2 billion in economic activity annually and by supporting nearly 2,000 jobs, arts-related 7 businesses and employing almost 16,000 people; and 8 WHEREAS, Arts learning fosters teamwork and collaboration, critical thinking, problem-9 solving, public speaking, tolerance, flexibility and attention to detail, all essential skills that 10 employers require in a 21st Century economy; and 11 WHEREAS, Arts education in the schools provides substantial educational benefits to all 12 elementary, middle and secondary students, helping students graduate with proficiency, ready to 13 enter the Rhode Island workforce; and 14 WHEREAS, The National Art Education Association designates the month of March as 15 “Youth Art Month”; and 16 WHEREAS, The American Alliance for Theatre & Education and the Educational 17 Theatre Association designates the month of March as “Theatre in our Schools” Month; and 18 WHEREAS, The National Association for Music Education designates the month of 19 LC000887 - Page 2 of 2 March as “Music in our Schools” Month; and 1 WHEREAS, The National Dance Education Organization designates the month of March 2 as “Dance in our Schools” Month; now, therefore be it 3 RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims March of 4 2023, to be “Arts in the Schools Month” in our State. We furthermore urge all the citizens of the 5 state to join us in the observance of this month, and to recognize and applaud the efforts of arts 6 educators, artists and administrators, who work diligently to ensure that all young people have 7 access to the arts in their school throughout the school year; and be it further 8 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 9 transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. 10 ======== LC000887 ========
