S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N 
HONORING SENATOR DENNIS L. ALGIERE FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF 
THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our good friend and colleague 1 
Senator Dennis Algiere, who is retiring from the Rhode Island Senate, District 38, after thirty 2 
years of devoted service to his constituents and the citizens of the State of Rhode Island; and  3 
WHEREAS, Born and raised in the Town of Westerly, Dennis Algiere graduated from 4 
Westerly High School, earned his Bachelor's degree from Providence College, a Master's degree 5 
from Northeastern University, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Massachusetts School 6 
of Law; and  7 
WHEREAS, In 1990, the Honorable Dennis Algiere began his public service on the 8 
Westerly Town Council, and in November of 1992, he successfully ran for the State Senate 9 
District 26 seat, which in 2003 became District 38, representing constituencies in the Towns of 10 
Westerly, Charlestown, and South Kingstown; and 11 
WHEREAS, Respected and admired by his peers, Senator Algiere was appointed Senate 12 
Deputy Minority Leader in 1995, and in 1997, was elected Minority Leader by the Republican 13 
caucus, a position he has continuously held over the past twenty-five years. In his capacity as 14 
Leader, he is an Ex Officio member of all Senate Committees; and 15 
WHEREAS, During his tenure in the Senate, Leader Algiere has been a staunch advocate 16 
for government reform, including the establishment of an Inspector General and the Julia Lynn 17 
Cardinal Act. During the COVID pandemic, he also introduced legislation seeking to exempt the 18 
first $10,200 of unemployment benefits from state taxes for out-of-work Rhode Islanders; and  19

WHEREAS, Consistently putting his District’s interests first, Leader Algiere has been 1 
active with myriad boards and committees, including serving on the Board of Directors for Salve 2 
Regina University and the Westerly Hospital, Chairman of the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park 3 
capital campaign and building committee, Chairman of the Westerly Police Department building 4 
committee, on the President's Advisory Council on the Arts at the John F. Kennedy Center and on 5 
the Consumer Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors; and 6 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Dennis Algiere's leadership and tireless devotion to the 7 
citizens of the Ocean State have earned him our unqualified admiration and respect, and he will 8 
most assuredly be missed; now, therefore be it 9 
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby honors Senator Dennis 10 
Algiere as he concludes his service in the Rhode Island Senate. We thank him for a job well done, 11 
and extend our sincere wishes for his continued health, happiness and success; and be it further 12 
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 13 
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Dennis Algiere. 14
