EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE P ASSING OF MARY E. SMITH

WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Mary E. 1 
Smith, the devoted wife of Richard Patrick Smith for nearly 50 years; and 2 
WHEREAS, Mary E. Smith was born in Providence, a daughter of the late Jean Aguiar. 3 
She graduated from the St. Joseph Hospital Nursing School in 1972, and began working as a 4 
registered nurse at Women & Infants in 1977; and 5 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was a devoted medical professional and skilled nurse who loved 6 
taking care of premature infants with her fellow nurses and doctors in the Neo-natal Intensive 7 
Care Unit; and 8 
WHEREAS, Even after retiring in 2013, Mrs. Smith would regularly get together with 9 
her nursing friends for lunch and camaraderie. She was a giving and loving person who always 10 
put her family and patients first in her life; and 11 
WHEREAS, In addition to her husband, Richard, Mary Smith leaves behind her sons, 12 
Brian Emmett Smith and his wife, Eileen, and Christopher Michael Smith and his wife, Lela, and 13 
her grandchildren, Douglas Emmett, Vivian Veronica, Caroline Elizabeth and Evelyn Elizabeth. 14 
She also leaves behind her siblings JoAnne Aguiar, Richard Aguiar, Sharon Snape and Robert 15 
Aguiar, her aunts Joan Furtado and Louise Kenney, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She 16 
was the mother of the late Jennifer Rebecca Palumbo; now, therefore be it 17 
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby expresses its deepest 18 
condolences on the passing of Mary E. Smith; and be it further 19 
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 20

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Richard Patrick Smith and Family. 1
