2023 -- S 0944 ======== LC002778 ======== S T A T E O F R H O D E I S L A N D IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2023 ____________ S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N PROCLAIMING APRIL OF 2023, TO BE THE "MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND Introduced By: Senators Murray, Tikoian, Sosnowski, Picard, Felag, Quezada, and Valverde Date Introduced: April 27, 2023 Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration WHEREAS, Across our nation, and here in the State of Rhode Island, children in military 1 families sacrifice much in order to allow their parents to serve our nation and protect our liberty. 2 In this month of April, people are encouraged to show support for our military and veteran 3 children, and to thank them for their strength and the sacrifices they have made and continue to 4 make; and 5 WHEREAS, More than two million military children in the United States have 6 experienced a parental deployment since 2001, and currently, 1.6 million have an active duty 7 parent worldwide. The average military student faces transition challenges every two or three 8 years, and most military children attend six to nine different school systems from kindergarten 9 through the 12th grade. Taking care of our military children sustains our nation's fighting force 10 and strengthens the health and safety of our nation's families and communities; and 11 WHEREAS, The Middletown School District serves the largest number of military kids 12 in the State, with approximately 300 military connected students, amounting to approximately 16 13 percent of the student population; and 14 WHEREAS, April 19th is also "PURPLE UP! FOR MILITARY KIDS" day. The month 15 of April is a time to recognize the service and sacrifices of our military members, their families, 16 and especially their children. "They deserve our support!"; now, therefore be it 17 RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims April of 18 2023, to be the "Month of the Military Child" in Rhode Island; and be it further 19 LC002778 - Page 2 of 2 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 1 transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Middletown School Committee, 2 Middletown School Superintendent Rosemarie Kraeger, and Chairwoman of the Military 3 Interstate Children's Compact Commission. 4 ======== LC002778 ========
