S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N 
RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING EAST PROVIDENCE HIGH SCHOOL ON 
BEING NAMED A "GREEN RIBBON SCHOOL" BY THE UNITED STATES 
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCAT ION

WHEREAS, The United States Department of Education annually recognizes top school 1 
systems nationwide who are successfully creating eco-friendly and sustainable school 2 
environments; and   3 
WHEREAS, In August of 2021, EPHS opened the doors to its brand new modern high 4 
school campus consisting of numerous environmentally friendly "green" components and 5 
technologies including LED fixtures, daylighting, efficient HVAC systems, bioretention areas, 6 
pervious surfaces, and six electric vehicle charging stations; and  7 
WHEREAS, Also noting the school's inclusion of the "Three Pillars" related to the award 8 
which includes reduced environmental impact and costs, improved health and wellness, and 9 
effective environmental and sustainability education, EPHS was recognized as a Postsecondary 10 
Sustainability Awardee for 2023 and was named a "Green Ribbon School"; and  11 
WHEREAS, The National Green Ribbon Award is the highest award bestowed to schools 12 
by the U.S. Department of Education and brings welcomed and deserved attention and 13 
recognition to the both the City of East Providence and its new High School for working tirelessly 14 
through their high quality, dedicated staff to foster a culture of great expectation and achievement 15 
for all students; and  16 
WHEREAS, The new EPHS clearly demonstrates what is possible when committed local 17 
government officials, school administrators and educators work together not only for the benefit 18 
of students but also for the sustainability and health of future generations and our environment; 19

now, therefore be it 1 
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes and 2 
congratulates East Providence High School on earning the prestigious "Green Ribbon School" 3 
designation from the U.S. Department of Education; and be it further  4 
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 5 
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Sandy Forand, Superintendent of East 6 
Providence Schools, William F. Black, Principal of East Providence High School, Jenni 7 
Azzaerno, Chair of the East Providence School Committee, and the Honorable Bob DaSilva, 8 
Mayor of the City of East Providence. 9
