Marchand was born on March 30, 1925, in Berlin, New 1 Hampshire. In the year of Mrs. Marchand's birth, a new Ford Model T cost approximately $295, a 2 loaf of bread cost 10 cents, a pound of butter cost 55 cents and a pound of bacon cost 47 cents; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, The year 1925 was one of great breakthroughs for women's equality in the 5 United States, with Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming and Ma Ferguson of Texas becoming the 6 first female Governors in United States history; and 7 WHEREAS, Mrs. Marchand met the love of her life, the late Alfred Marchand, on a blind 8 date. They later married, and raised six children, Christine, Robert, Russell, Kevin, Louise, and 9 Timothy in Central Falls; and 10 WHEREAS, A dedicated and hardworking woman, Mrs. Marchand tirelessly provided 11 for her family and loved ones. Leona worked for more than 25 years at Ann & Hope, and after a 12 brief retirement, accepted a position with the Central Falls Public Schools as a food server, a 13 position she held until the age of 90; and 14 WHEREAS, In her well-earned retirement, Mrs. Marchand enjoys gardening, tending to 15 her flower beds, and spending cherished time with her loved ones, especially at a camp in Maine. 16 She also makes yearly visits to Berlin, New Hampshire, to visit friends. Additionally, she enjoys 17 knitting, cooking, baking, and watching the Hallmark Channel; now, therefore be it 18 RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 19 LC002474 - Page 2 of 2 joyously celebrates the 100th Birthday of Leona P.
