Hodges AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS. Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Reverend Kenneth F. Hodges on April 22, 2025, at the age of seventy-three; and Whereas, a native of Bennetts Point, Reverend Hodges was born on February 11, 1952, to parents Benjamin F. Hodges and Lydia Whaley Hodges; and Whereas, Reverend Hodges earned his Bachelor of Arts from Clark College in 1977 and his Master of Divinity from the Morehouse School of Religion of Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia; and Whereas, Reverend Hodges married Patricia Few Hodges on August 7, 1982, and together they had three children, Kendrea, Kenyatta, and Kenithea; and Whereas, Reverend Hodges was the pastor of Beaufort's Tabernacle Baptist Church in the center of downtown Charleston. He led the church for nearly thirty years and was as much a staple of the community at the church itself; and Whereas, the legendary Tabernacle Baptist Church is a historic landmark where enslaved people went to worship in the mid-1800s. Reverend Hodges was instrumental to preserving the history of the church, which included his efforts to memorialize the church's ties to Harriet Tubman and Robert Smalls; and Whereas, one of Reverend Hodges' proudest accomplishments in his efforts to preserve Beaufort history was the monument erected in honor of Harriet Tubman. The sculpture, by artist Ed Dwight, depicts Harriet Tubman's leading of a faction during the historic Combahee River Raid; and Whereas, a civic leader, Reverend Hodges was a former member of the House of Representatives, where he represented House District 121 and where he was known for his dedication to his constituents and his ability to work across the aisle in order to best serve the people and the State of South Carolina; and Whereas, in addition to his legislative work, Reverend Hodges was involved in his community through his leadership as the Bennettsville Housing Authority Commissioner and Chairman; his membership in a ministerial delegation to London, Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa; his involvement in the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance; his work as faculty on the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education; his membership on the executive board of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina; his membership on the board of directors of the Beaufort Area Boys and Girls Club; and much more; and Whereas, Reverend Hodges leaves to cherish his memory his family, his many friends, and the community that he so lovingly served. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore, Be it resolved by the Senate: That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the passing of Reverend Kenneth F. Hodges and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends. Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Reverend Kenneth F.
