1313 AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 3 and
1414 Title 4, relative to days of special observance.

1616 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore is a community leader in Whitehaven, Tennessee, who has
1717 been called the "Mayor of Whitehaven." She has worked to improve the community in many
1818 ways, including fighting drugs and teen pregnancy, and promoting community pride; and
1919 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore founded the Academy of Youth Empowerment to help teens
2020 develop social skills and study habits, and led a drive to build a new library; and
2121 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore started the Community Health Fair, which provides free school
2222 supplies and health screenings for students and parents; and
2323 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore has been honored with the Pioneer Memphis Business Award
2424 (1996), the American Heart Association Outstanding Volunteer Award (1998, 2001), and the
2525 Black Business Association's Benny Award (2002); and
2626 WHEREAS, the Hazel Moore Award was created to honor her contributions to Memphis,
2727 and a street was dedicated in her name in honor of her contributions to the community; and
2828 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore's work has inspired others to care for their communities, and
2929 she is considered a catalyst for change in Whitehaven, Tennessee; now, therefore,
3030 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL AS SEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
3131 SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 4, Chapter 1, Part 4, is amended by
3232 adding the following as a new section:
3333 December 14 of each year is designated as "Hazel Moore Day."
3434 SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
