13	13	AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49,
14	14	relative to public schools.

16	16	BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
17	17	SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(1), is amended by
18	18	deleting "Teachers and employees of public schools and LEAs" and substituting instead
19	19	"Teachers, employees, and students of public schools and LEAs".
20	20	SECTION 2. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(1), is amended by
21	21	deleting "work" and substituting instead "work or school".
22	22	SECTION 3. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(2), is amended by
23	23	deleting "teachers and employees of public schools and LEAs" and substituting instead
24	24	"teachers, employees, and students of public schools and LEAs".
25	25	SECTION 4. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(3), is amended by
26	26	deleting "teachers and employees" and substituting instead "teachers, employees, and
27	27	students".
28	28	SECTION 5. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(4), is amended by
29	29	deleting "teacher or employee" wherever it appears and substituting instead "teacher,
30	30	employee, or student".
31	31	SECTION 6. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(b), is amended by
32	32	deleting "A teacher or other employee of a public school or LEA" and substituting instead "A
33	33	teacher, employee, or student of a public school or LEA".
34	34	SECTION 7. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(b)(1), is amended by
35	35	deleting "a student's preferred pronoun" and substituting instead "the preferred pronoun of a

40	40	teacher, school employee, or student", deleting "the student" and substituting instead "the
41	41	teacher, school employee, or student", and deleting "the student's" and substituting instead "the
42	42	biological sex of the teacher, school employee, or student".
43	43	SECTION 8. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(b)(2), is amended by
44	44	adding the language "under the laws of this state" after the language "Civilly liable", deleting
45	45	"the student" and substituting instead "a teacher, school employee, or student", deleting
46	46	"teacher or employee" and substituting instead "teacher, school employee, or student", and
47	47	deleting "student's preferred pronoun" and substituting instead "preferred pronoun of the
48	48	teacher, school employee, or student".
49	49	SECTION 9. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(b)(3), is amended by
50	50	deleting "employment action" and substituting instead "employment or disciplinary action",
51	51	deleting "a student's preferred pronoun" and substituting instead "the preferred pronoun of a
52	52	teacher, school employee, or student", deleting "student's" wherever it appears in the
53	53	subdivision, and adding the following language after "biological sex":

55	55	SECTION 10. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(c), is amended by
56	56	adding the language "under the laws of this state" after the language "civilly liable", deleting
57	57	"teacher or employee of the public school or LEA" and substituting instead "teacher, employee,
58	58	or student of the public school or LEA", deleting "a student" and substituting instead "a teacher,
59	59	school employee, or student", deleting "the student" and substituting instead "the teacher,
60	60	school employee, or student", deleting "the teacher or employee" and substituting instead "the
61	61	teacher, school employee, or student", deleting "student's", and adding the following language
62	62	after "preferred pronoun":
63	63	of the teacher, school employee, or student
64	64	SECTION 11. This act takes effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
