17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, it is fitting that we pay tribute to those citizens who are celebrating special |

18 | 18 | | occasions in their estimable lives; and |

19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Jessie Lee Coppock will celebrate her 104 |

21 | 21 | | birthday on March 7, 2025, a |

22 | 22 | | milestone that will be commemorated as yet another precious souvenir of life's rich pageant; |

24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Coppock was born on March 7, 1921, in Crawford County, and she has |
---|
25 | 25 | | enjoyed an amazing life and experienced firsthand the breadth and span of American history; |
---|
26 | 26 | | and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, the second of thirteen children born to Robert Lee Gulledge and Olvie |
---|
28 | 28 | | Elizabeth Harris Gulledge, Jessie Coppock relocated with her family to Conasauga in Polk |
---|
29 | 29 | | County, where her father sought employment and worked as a sharecropper and in sawmills to |
---|
30 | 30 | | make ends meet; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Coppock has recalled many of the hardships her family endured in |
---|
32 | 32 | | order to survive, such as eating cornmeal gravy made with water until the wheat grain was |
---|
33 | 33 | | ready for harvest and saving eggs to trade for coffee and other necessary items from the rolling |
---|
34 | 34 | | store, which came by once a week; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, her family often crossed a frozen Conasauga River by wagon in the |
---|
36 | 36 | | wintertime and walked when road conditions became too muddy for the wagon wheels; she also |
---|
37 | 37 | | went to school in a covered wagon, taking her milk in an old vanilla flavoring bottle and carrying |
---|
38 | 38 | | her food in a metal bucket; and |

43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Jessie Coppock and her family stored vegetables underground to prevent |

44 | 44 | | them from freezing and made what was known as "leather britches," green beans strung up with |

45 | 45 | | thread to dry; at times, breakfast consisted of only cooked corn, but her father ensured they |
---|
46 | 46 | | never went to bed hungry; and |
---|
47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, the children normally helped with housework, among other farming jobs, |
---|
48 | 48 | | including cutting sugarcane and loading the wagon; washing laundry by the river and hanging |
---|
49 | 49 | | the clothes on shrubs to dry; and picking cotton and loading it into the gin, a job that proved to |
---|
50 | 50 | | be quite dangerous, if they were not careful; and |
---|
51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Coppock would help her mother make lye soap from fireplace ashes, |
---|
52 | 52 | | can green beans by boiling them in the wash tub, salt and sugar cure the hog meat, and milk |
---|
53 | 53 | | the cows to clabber and churn buttermilk and butter; and |
---|
54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, at the age of six, Jessie Coppock was required to walk a quarter mile to the |
---|
55 | 55 | | barn to feed and harness the mules for work in the fields; she would then return home and |
---|
56 | 56 | | prepare breakfast alongside her older sister, using homemade stools to reach the top of the |
---|
57 | 57 | | wood stove; and |
---|
58 | 58 | | WHEREAS, despite many hardships, Ms. Coppock, her family, and other neighborhood |
---|
59 | 59 | | children found joy in the small things and always made time to play and enjoy one another's |
---|
60 | 60 | | company; after the Conasauga River Bridge was completed, Conasauga residents gathered at |
---|
61 | 61 | | the edge of the bridge to celebrate, with people praying, singing songs, and worshipping; and |
---|
62 | 62 | | WHEREAS, as Jessie Coppock enters her 104 |

64 | 64 | | year, she is truly revered for her |

65 | 65 | | perseverance and her dedication to her family and faith; and |

66 | 66 | | WHEREAS, we wish to grasp this golden opportunity to specially recognize one of |
