17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly take great pleasure in joining with |
---|
18 | 18 | | the counties that comprise this great State in celebrating joyous and historic occasions; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, bountiful and beautiful Wilson County and its citizens are most assuredly |
---|
20 | 20 | | deserving of special recognition, as they celebrated the 225 |
---|
21 | 21 | | th |
---|
22 | 22 | | anniversary of the county's |
---|
23 | 23 | | founding on October 26, 2024; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Wilson County was named in honor of Major David Wilson, a native of |
---|
25 | 25 | | Pennsylvania, who came to Sumner County while it was still a part of North Carolina; he was |
---|
26 | 26 | | the first Speaker of the Territorial Assembly; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, at that time, the Cumberland River was impassable for five or six months of |
---|
28 | 28 | | the year, making it very difficult for citizens to conduct their government affairs, so the people |
---|
29 | 29 | | who lived in the area petitioned to become a new county, with a county seat and government |
---|
30 | 30 | | offices for the citizens of the area to manage and carry on their business; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, on October 26, 1799, Wilson County was allowed by the state legislature to |
---|
32 | 32 | | break away from Sumner County, which was a large area at the time, and form its own |
---|
33 | 33 | | government; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, the citizens of Wilson County have added and continue to add |
---|
35 | 35 | | immeasurably to the strength and character of Tennessee; their history and accomplishments |
---|
36 | 36 | | have helped build the cultural richness for which this State is known; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Wilson County is one of the great counties in Tennessee, and it is most |
---|
38 | 38 | | appropriate that we honor this fine community and its citizenry as they commemorate this |
---|
39 | 39 | | significant milestone in their historic existence; now, therefore, |
