17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should pause to pay |

18 | 18 | | tribute to those students who, through their natural talents and unflagging commitment to |

19 | 19 | | excellence, have distinguished themselves as academic achievers; and |

20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Abigail Whicker, a senior at Mt. Juliet Christian Academy and a |
---|
21 | 21 | | representative of the Tyler Cates Post 281, is one such exceptional student, who was recently |
---|
22 | 22 | | named the state winner of the American Legion Department of Tennessee Oratorical Contest; |
---|
23 | 23 | | and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, no stranger to academic competition, Ms. Whicker has won the 5 |
---|
25 | 25 | | th |
---|
26 | 26 | | District |
---|
27 | 27 | | Contest, the Central Division Contest, and the State Level Oratorical Contest in both 2023 and |
---|
28 | 28 | | 2024; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, having won the American Legion Department of Tennessee Contest, she |

30 | 30 | | then advanced to the semifinal round at the national event for the past two years; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Abigail Whicker is active in the arts at Mt. Juliet Christian Academy, where |

32 | 32 | | she participates in dance, theatre, and music programs, and she has engaged with her |

33 | 33 | | community through Youth Leadership Wilson; and |

34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Whicker's election as president of her school's National Honor Society |

35 | 35 | | chapter gave her the opportunity to help organize a goal-surpassing diaper drive for the |

36 | 36 | | Pregnancy Care Center; and |

44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, one of the highlights of Abigail Whicker's high school career has been |

45 | 45 | | attending the Tennessee Governor's School for the Agricultural Sciences at the University of |

46 | 46 | | Tennessee at Martin last summer, and she is also thrilled to be representing Middle Tennessee |

47 | 47 | | FFA as the organization's 2024-2025 Regional Vice President; and |

48 | 48 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Whicker first found her niche in public speaking through her |

49 | 49 | | participation in FFA, and she was the state winner for the FFA Prepared Public Speaking |

50 | 50 | | Leadership Development Event in 2024 with her speech about the PRIME Act; she went on to |
---|
51 | 51 | | represent Tennessee in this event at the FFA National Convention this past October, where she |
---|
52 | 52 | | was honored to be among the top eight in the nation who were named as Gold Emblem finalists; |

53 | 53 | | and |
---|
54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, Abigail Whicker has also honed her communication skills through |
---|
55 | 55 | | competitive horse evaluation, and she and her FFA horse-judging team are the reigning state |
---|
56 | 56 | | champions; and |

57 | 57 | | WHEREAS, after earning a generous amount of scholarship funds through these events, |
---|
58 | 58 | | she plans to attend college here in her home state; Ms. Whicker is currently preparing to run for |

59 | 59 | | a state officer position with Tennessee FFA, and she sees agriculture advocacy and shaping |
---|
60 | 60 | | public policy as part of her future; and |

61 | 61 | | WHEREAS, Abigail Whicker also loves writing music and leading worship, and she |

62 | 62 | | hopes to raise a family and perhaps have a farm someday; and |

63 | 63 | | WHEREAS, her noteworthy achievements are a tremendous source of pride for her |

64 | 64 | | parents, John and Robin Whicker, her school, and her community, and she is clearly deserving |
