1212 A RESOLUTION relative to a voluntary reporting system for
1313 Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease in Tennessee.
1414
1515 WHEREAS, Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) is one of the most common inherited
1616 neurological disorders, affecting an estimated one in 2,500 people in the United States; this
1717 statistic suggests that approximately 2,800 Tennesseans may be affected by CMT; and
1818 WHEREAS, the Department of Health currently maintains voluntary reporting systems
1919 for various health conditions through its existing web-based information technology system; and
2020 WHEREAS, thus, no additional state appropriation would be required to implement CMT
2121 reporting through existing departmental resources and systems; and
2222 WHEREAS, accurate enumeration of CMT patients would enhance Tennessee's
2323 competitiveness for federal research grants and specialized care centers; and
2424 WHEREAS, this General Assembly recognizes that improved data collection for rare
2525 diseases aligns with the State's commitment to efficient healthcare resource allocation; and
2626 WHEREAS, voluntary reporting through existing healthcare networks would impose no
2727 mandatory costs on healthcare providers or the State; and
2828 WHEREAS, this data collection effort would support Tennessee's healthcare providers in
2929 delivering more targeted and effective care to CMT patients; now, therefore,
3030 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
3131 FOURTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
3232 CONCURRING, that this General Assembly encourages the Department of Health to:

3434 through existing electronic health record systems;

4242 jurisdiction over subject matters concerning health and the Senate Health and Welfare
4343 Committee on the progress of this voluntary initiative.
4444 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that it is the intent of this General Assembly that such
4545 voluntary reporting system shall not create any new financial obligations for the State of
4646 Tennessee.
