1212 A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of Major General Jackie
1313 Daniel Wood of Lexington.

1515 WHEREAS, we were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Major General Jackie
1616 Daniel Wood of Lexington; and
1717 WHEREAS, Jackie Daniel Wood was an exemplary public servant and consummate
1818 professional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for his fellow citizens in
1919 numerous capacities; and
2020 WHEREAS, the son of William Hughel Wood and Eliza Tolley Wood, Dan Wood was
2121 born on October 6, 1940, in Lexington on Maple Street; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Wood attended Lexington City School and Lexington High School,
2323 where he showcased his excellent athletic skills in basketball especially; and
2424 WHEREAS, after graduating in 1959, Mr. Wood enlisted in the United States Army in
2525 1961 and served as a sergeant in Vietnam; upon his return from active duty, he joined the
2626 Tennessee Army National Guard in 1965; and
2727 WHEREAS, completing officer candidate school at the Tennessee Military Academy, he
2828 went on to serve his State in various capacities, including acting as commander of the 4/117th
2929 Infantry Battalion and as deputy director of Plans, Operations, and Training at Tennessee State
3030 Area Command; and
3131 WHEREAS, Mr. Wood continued his education and graduated from Cumberland
3232 University in 1986 and the Air University in 1992, showing a residing commitment to personal
3333 development and enrichment; and
3434 WHEREAS, in 1995, Mr. Wood became the seventy-third Adjutant General of
3535 Tennessee, the State's highest military position; and
3636 WHEREAS, his extensive military accomplishments were rightfully recognized by
3737 numerous commendations: the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the

4242 Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with 1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, the National
4343 Defense Service Medal with 1 Silver Star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Armed
4444 Forces Reserve Medal with gold hour glass devices, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Republic
4545 of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with '60' device; and
4646 WHEREAS, his military career was supplemented by his thirty-plus-year civilian career
4747 with South Central Bell, a role that further demonstrated his remarkable talents and dedication;
4848 and
4949 WHEREAS, thoughtful of this world and the next, General Wood was baptized as a
5050 young man at Second Baptist Church in Lexington, and he was a current member of First
5151 Baptist Church of Lexington, where he attended the Jack Hay Sunday School class; and
5252 WHEREAS, outside of his multiple successful careers and seasons of study, Mr. Wood
5353 had a lifelong passion for history, particularly Tennessee history, and he was always proud of
5454 being able to say he was a fourth-generation resident of Henderson County and a fifth-
5555 generation Tennessean; and
5656 WHEREAS, he was also deeply devoted to his family, as a son, father, husband, and
5757 brother, and always endeavored to remain true to family values of the highest order; and
5858 WHEREAS, Dan Wood will be sadly mourned yet fondly remembered by his wife of
5959 sixty-two years, Janis Fesmire Wood; his son, Stuart Wood; his daughter, Amy Wood (Charlie)
6060 Halters; his grandchildren, Trey Halters, Caleb Halters, and Becca Halters; his siblings Barry
6161 (Gail) Wood, Ridonna Wood Renfroe, and David Wood; and an extended family of nieces and
6262 nephews; and
6363 WHEREAS, in addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Joe
6464 Tolley Wood, Bradley (Ida Mae) Wood, Vonzille Wood (Jim) McClendon, Dorothy Wood Jones,
6565 and Royal (Mary Nell) Wood; and his brother-in-law, Wayne Renfroe; and
6666 WHEREAS, Dan Wood leaves behind an indelible legacy of integrity and probity in
6767 public life, compassion and loyalty in private life, and diligence and dedication in all his chosen
6868 endeavors; and

7373 WHEREAS, it is fitting that we should remember the bountiful life of this exceptional
7474 officer, gentleman, and human being; now, therefore,
7575 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
7676 FOURTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
7777 CONCURRING, that we honor the memory of Major General Jackie Daniel Wood, reflecting
7878 fondly upon his impeccable character and his stalwart commitment to living the examined life
7979 with courage and conviction.
8080 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and offer our condolences
8181 to the family of General Wood.
8282 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
8383 for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
8484 the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
