12 | 12 | | A RESOLUTION to honor and commend Dr. Charles Kimbrough |

13 | 13 | | for his outstanding community leadership. |

15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, it is the pleasure of the members of this General Assembly to acknowledge |
---|
16 | 16 | | those venerable Tennesseans who were willing to sacrifice their personal safety to fight to |
---|
17 | 17 | | ensure the individual and collective freedom of oppressed groups across the nation; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, one such distinguished individual is Dr. Charles Kimbrough, a civil rights |
---|
19 | 19 | | activist, former president of the Nashville branch of the NAACP, military veteran, retired |
---|
20 | 20 | | veterinarian, and minister; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, born on June 24, 1927, in Prospect, Dr. Kimbrough grew up during the |
---|
22 | 22 | | height of the vicious and brutal Jim Crow South, relatively close to Pulaski, the birthplace of the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Ku Klux Klan. He learned early on from his family the value of hard work, perseverance, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | determination; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, a veteran of the Korean War, Dr. Kimbrough traveled extensively while |
---|
26 | 26 | | enlisted in the armed forces and learned French while stationed in France. He earned a Purple |
---|
27 | 27 | | Heart, Medical Combat Award, and Bronze Star in 1950 for his bravery while serving; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, following the conclusion of his military service, he used the GI Bill to attend |
---|
29 | 29 | | Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State University, graduating in 1956 with honors and a |
---|
30 | 30 | | Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Kimbrough went on to enroll in the Tuskegee |
---|
31 | 31 | | Institute, where he earned a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, becoming one of the first African |
---|
32 | 32 | | Americans to hold a license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Tennessee; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, as a member of the Civil Rights Movement in Tennessee, Dr. Kimbrough |
---|
34 | 34 | | introduced scores of African Americans to the NAACP and its mission to remove all barriers of |
---|
35 | 35 | | racial discrimination through democratic processes; and |

40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, he established and organized NAACP chapters in Sparta, Illinois (Randolph |

41 | 41 | | County Branch); Dugoin, Illinois (Perry County Branch); Pulaski (Giles County Branch); and |

42 | 42 | | Waverly (Waverly Branch); and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Kimbrough served as president of the Nashville branch from 1973 to |
---|
44 | 44 | | 1980, during which time he saw a surge in chapter membership. The increase in numbers at |
---|
45 | 45 | | the time assisted greatly in addressing civil rights issues within the local African-American |
---|
46 | 46 | | community; and |
---|
47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Kimbrough was also a devoted and compassionate minister, |
---|
48 | 48 | | who touched thousands of lives through his sermons. He and his wife, Dr. Blondell Strong |
---|
49 | 49 | | Kimbrough, also owned Bordeaux Realty Plus; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, he is the proud father of son Reverend Adric Winters Kimbrough; special |
---|
51 | 51 | | sons Jeff Strong, Sanford Strong, and Jeffrey Brown; and daughter Gwenell Buchanan; and the |
---|
52 | 52 | | devoted grandfather of five grandchildren; and |
---|
53 | 53 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Kimbrough truly embodies the volunteer spirit, and he has done |
---|
54 | 54 | | much to contribute to the well-being of his fellow citizens in various capacities; and |
---|
55 | 55 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Kimbrough is a public-spirited citizen of the highest order and most |
---|
56 | 56 | | worthy of our approbation; now, therefore, |
---|
57 | 57 | | BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED |
