15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly take great pleasure in recognizing a |
---|
16 | 16 | | civic organization that has worked diligently for fifty years to preserve Chattanooga's |
---|
17 | 17 | | architectural heritage through historic preservation, education, and advocacy; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Preserve Chattanooga was founded as Landmarks Chattanooga in 1975 |
---|
19 | 19 | | and was known for many years as Cornerstones; no matter the name, the organization is |
---|
20 | 20 | | committed to expanding its fifty-year legacy; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, in its earliest days, the organization, through its board of directors, was |
---|
22 | 22 | | instrumental in saving the Walnut Street Bridge, a Chattanooga landmark; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, today, Preserve Chattanooga provides strategic preservation leadership via |
---|
24 | 24 | | building acquisitions and transfers, structural assessment funding, stabilization grants, and |
---|
25 | 25 | | impactful partnerships with other agencies and foundations; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, the Central Block Building, Passenger Freight Depot, Burchay Building, |
---|
27 | 27 | | Stong Building, Brown's Tavern, First Congregational Church, Tomorrow Building, Park Place |
---|
28 | 28 | | School, Engel Stadium, the Industrial YMCA, and many more historic edifices have benefited |
---|
29 | 29 | | from the nonprofit organization's efforts; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Terminal Station, The Dome Building, Customs House, and the Trigg- |

31 | 31 | | Smartt Building (Tivoli Center) will remain architectural treasures for future generations due to |

32 | 32 | | the protective facade easements Preserve Chattanooga has procured for these historic |
---|
33 | 33 | | buildings; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, in addition to providing direct assistance to property owners, |
---|
35 | 35 | | neighborhoods, and developers, Preserve Chattanooga utilizes many other tools to promote |
---|

43 | 43 | | the Regional Planning Agency to update the 1977 Chattanooga Preservation Plan, which will |

44 | 44 | | include extensive input from the community and become a blueprint for the future; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Preserve Chattanooga's grant partners have included the 1772 Foundation, |
---|
46 | 46 | | State of Tennessee, Tennessee Arts Commission, and Chattanooga Tourism Company over |
---|
47 | 47 | | the years; and |
---|
48 | 48 | | WHEREAS, Preserve Chattanooga annually partners with the University of Tennessee |
---|
49 | 49 | | at Chattanooga's (UTC) Interior Architecture and Design program to offer a minor in Historic |
---|

51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, the organization also assists with UTC senior thesis projects that provide |

52 | 52 | | neglected historic Chattanooga buildings with adaptive reuse concepts, a partnership that has |

53 | 53 | | reached more than 300 students since 2016; and |

54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, Preserve Chattanooga has collaborated with Chattanooga Tourism to make |

55 | 55 | | available online self-guided architectural tours for Chattanooga neighborhoods, including the |

56 | 56 | | Downtown Historic District, Southside, Stone Fort, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., District, and the |
---|
57 | 57 | | University/McCallie Avenue corridor; and |

58 | 58 | | WHEREAS, Preserve Chattanooga is a member of the National Trust for Historic |
---|
59 | 59 | | Preservation, National Preservation Partners Network, Southeast Chapter of the Society of |
---|
60 | 60 | | Architectural Historians, and National Alliance of Preservation Commissions; and |
---|
61 | 61 | | WHEREAS, Preserve Chattanooga stays informed of preservation efforts through the |
---|
62 | 62 | | Tennessee Historical Commission at the State level and through the Advisory Council on |
