1212 A RESOLUTION to honor and commend Marta W. Aldrich on the
1313 occasion of her retirement.

1515 WHEREAS, we are pleased to recognize a journalist who has performed with
1616 uncommon devotion and enthusiasm throughout her nearly four-decade career; and
1717 WHEREAS, one such distinguished individual is Marta W. Aldrich, the Senior
1818 Statehouse Correspondent for Chalkbeat Tennessee, who recently took her much deserved
1919 retirement; and
2020 WHEREAS, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Ms. Aldrich
2121 began her illustrious career as a reporter at The Knoxville News-Sentinel, where she covered
2222 the 1982 World's Fair and local government; and
2323 WHEREAS, a dedicated professional, she spent a dozen years as a writer and editor
2424 with The Associated Press, Nashville bureau, where she covered state government, business,
2525 politics, sports, and more, with a special emphasis in news feature writing; and
2626 WHEREAS, Ms. Aldrich was also a freelance journalist for five years, during which time
2727 her work was published by The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Dow Jones News Service,
2828 and The Christian Science Monitor, among others; and
2929 WHEREAS, for two years, she served as the news editor of United Methodist News
3030 Service, where she coordinated coverage for the official global news agency of The United
3131 Methodist Church, followed by five years as features editor of American Profile, then the
3232 nation's most widely distributed Americana magazine; and
3333 WHEREAS, at Chalkbeat Tennessee, Ms. Aldrich kept Tennesseans and education
3434 professionals around the globe informed as she covered educational change efforts in our
3535 communities as well as education issues at the State Capitol; and

4040 WHEREAS, a well-functioning democracy depends upon an informed electorate, and
4141 Marta Aldrich did more than her part to provide reliable and accurate information to the reading
4242 public; now, therefore,
4343 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
4444 FOURTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
4545 CONCURRING, that we honor Marta W. Aldrich on her illustrious career on the occasion of her
4646 retirement, commending her many contributions to journalism and extending to her our best
4747 wishes for much continued success and happiness.
4848 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
4949 for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
5050 the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
5151 without House or Senate designation.
