1313 A RESOLUTION to honor the efforts of the Eastern Band of
1414 Cherokee Indians to reclaim their ancestral
1515 lands in Monroe County.

1717 WHEREAS, H.R. 226, a bill that seeks to return historical sites in Monroe County to the
1818 Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, passed the U.S. House of Representatives on February 4,
1919 2025; and
2020 WHEREAS, H.R. 226 places four parcels of specified land and easements in Monroe
2121 County into a trust for the use and benefit of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and
2222 WHEREAS, the parcels of land include the acreage on which the Sequoyah Birthplace
2323 Museum is located, a twelve-acre support parcel, a one-acre island, and Chota, the original
2424 Overhill capital town of the Cherokees; and
2525 WHEREAS, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has a rich history in East Tennessee,
2626 and we are pleased to commend the efforts of the Cherokee people to reclaim their historical
2727 lands in Monroe County; now, therefore,
2828 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
2929 FOURTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
3030 CONCURRING, that we commend the efforts of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to
3131 regain their cultural and historical lands in Monroe County.
3232 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
3333 for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
3434 the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
3535 without House or Senate designation.
