1212 A RESOLUTION to honor the late Bertha Mae Dees Faulkner,
1313 posthumous recipient of the Governor's
1414 Volunteer Stars Award.

1616 WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should specially
1717 recognize those estimable citizens who have dedicated their time and energies to helping
1818 others; and
1919 WHEREAS, each year, 1.3 million Tennessee volunteers give over 99 million hours of
2020 community service, contributing $2.6 billion to Tennessee's economy; and
2121 WHEREAS, these volunteers are the backbone of our communities, and by donating
2222 their time and talents to fulfill needs that would otherwise go unmet, they embody the spirit of
2323 giving; and
2424 WHEREAS, Bertha Mae Dees Faulkner of Lawrence County was one such exemplary
2525 person; Ms. Faulkner has been posthumously honored with the Governor's Volunteer Stars
2626 Award in recognition of her laudable commitment to her community; and
2727 WHEREAS, Bertha Mae Dees Faulkner began working with the South Central Human
2828 Resource Agency in the Head Start Program in 1973; after serving the children in her
2929 community in this capacity for thirty-three years, she began volunteering at New Prospect
3030 Elementary School; and
3131 WHEREAS, known affectionately as "Ma Bert" by first-grade students at New Prospect,
3232 Mrs. Faulkner mentored and tutored children for nineteen years as a member of the school's
3333 Foster Grandparent Program; and
3434 WHEREAS, during her nearly two decades at New Prospect Elementary School, "Ma
3535 Bert" was a stand-in granny for more than 370 students; her legacy of compassion and service

4040 lives on through these individuals, as well as her three children, six grandchildren, and seven
4141 great-grandchildren; and
4242 WHEREAS, Mrs. Faulkner was a model citizen; her commitment to helping others
4343 through volunteerism epitomized the spirit of the Volunteer State; now, therefore,
4444 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
4545 FOURTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
4646 CONCURRING, that we honor the late Bertha Mae Dees Faulkner, posthumous recipient of the
4747 Governor's Volunteer Stars Award, reflecting fondly on her outstanding community leadership
4848 and her legacy of service above self.
4949 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
5050 for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
5151 the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
5252 without House or Senate designation.
