16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should specially |
---|
17 | 17 | | recognize those estimable citizens who have dedicated their time and energies to helping |
---|
18 | 18 | | others; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, each year, 1.3 million Tennessee volunteers give over 99 million hours of |
---|
20 | 20 | | community service, contributing $2.6 billion to Tennessee's economy; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, these volunteers are the backbone of our communities, and by donating |
---|
22 | 22 | | their time and talents to fulfill needs that would otherwise go unmet, they embody the spirit of |
---|
23 | 23 | | giving; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Bertha Mae Dees Faulkner of Lawrence County was one such exemplary |
---|
25 | 25 | | person; Ms. Faulkner has been posthumously honored with the Governor's Volunteer Stars |
---|
26 | 26 | | Award in recognition of her laudable commitment to her community; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Bertha Mae Dees Faulkner began working with the South Central Human |
---|
28 | 28 | | Resource Agency in the Head Start Program in 1973; after serving the children in her |
---|
29 | 29 | | community in this capacity for thirty-three years, she began volunteering at New Prospect |
---|
30 | 30 | | Elementary School; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, known affectionately as "Ma Bert" by first-grade students at New Prospect, |
---|
32 | 32 | | Mrs. Faulkner mentored and tutored children for nineteen years as a member of the school's |
---|
33 | 33 | | Foster Grandparent Program; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, during her nearly two decades at New Prospect Elementary School, "Ma |
---|
35 | 35 | | Bert" was a stand-in granny for more than 370 students; her legacy of compassion and service |
---|

43 | 43 | | through volunteerism epitomized the spirit of the Volunteer State; now, therefore, |

44 | 44 | | BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED |

45 | 45 | | FOURTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE |

46 | 46 | | CONCURRING, that we honor the late Bertha Mae Dees Faulkner, posthumous recipient of the |

47 | 47 | | Governor's Volunteer Stars Award, reflecting fondly on her outstanding community leadership |
---|
48 | 48 | | and her legacy of service above self. |

49 | 49 | | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared |

50 | 50 | | for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to |
