12	12	A RESOLUTION to honor the legendary country music band
13	13	Sawyer Brown on the occasion of their fortieth
14	14	anniversary.

16	16	WHEREAS, Sawyer Brown, formed in Apopka, Florida, in 1981 by Mark Miller, Gregg
17	17	"Hobie" Hubbard, Bobby Randall, Joe "Curly" Smyth, and Jim Scholten, emerged from Don
18	18	King's road band and went on to become one of the most influential and enduring acts in
19	19	country music history; and
20	20	WHEREAS, the band rose to national prominence in 1984 by winning the inaugural
21	21	season of Star Search with Ed McMahon, captivating America with their electrifying
22	22	performances and taking home the $100,000 grand prize and a recording contract with Capitol
23	23	Records; and
24	24	WHEREAS, the band—whose sound was compared to country supergroups like
25	25	Alabama and the Charlie Daniels Band, yet whose look echoed the raw energy of the Rolling
26	26	Stones and Aerosmith—blazed their own path in the music industry, combining a high-energy
27	27	stage presence with a distinct "life songs" ethos rather than traditional love songs; and
28	28	WHEREAS, their breakout hit "Leona" in 1984 was soon followed by their first No.1
29	29	single, "Step That Step," beginning a remarkable run of over fifty charted singles on the
30	30	Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, including additional No. 1 hits like "Some Girls Do" and
31	31	"Thank God for You"; and
32	32	WHEREAS, throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the band evolved musically, moving from
33	33	country-pop to more meaningful ballads, and released a string of successful albums including
34	34	The Dirt Road, Café on the Corner, and Outskirts of Town, many under their longtime label,

40	40	WHEREAS, Sawyer Brown has performed over 6,000 shows, released twenty-four
41	41	albums and thirty-six videos, and earned eleven major industry awards, including honors from
42	42	the CMA, ACM, and CMT, as well as the 1985 CMA Horizon Award and Vocal Group of the
43	43	Year in 1997 from the Academy of Country Music; and
44	44	WHEREAS, they have shared stages with legendary artists, including Kenny Rogers,
45	45	Dolly Parton, the Beach Boys, Ray Charles, and KC of the Sunshine Band, influencing the next
46	46	generation of stars such as Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Dierks Bentley, and Kenny Chesney;

48	48	WHEREAS, Sawyer Brown continues to connect with fans across generations,
49	49	performing for audiences that now span parents, children, and grandparents alike, creating a
50	50	unique multi-generational bond through music; and
51	51	WHEREAS, 2024 marks the fortieth anniversary of their Star Search victory and the
52	52	launch of an iconic career, which is being celebrated through a forthcoming memoir by Mark
53	53	Miller, a documentary on the band, and a new album co-produced with Blake Shelton; now,
54	54	therefore,
55	55	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
56	56	FOURTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SE NATE
57	57	CONCURRING, that we recognize and honor Sawyer Brown for four decades of excellence in
58	58	music, innovation in the country-rock genre, and unwavering dedication to their fans and craft.
59	59	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we commend the band's remarkable journey from
60	60	underdogs to industry icons and celebrate the legacy they continue to build, one unforgettable
61	61	show at a time.
62	62	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
