14	14	A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of the victims of the Waffle
15	15	House shooting in Nashville on the seventh
16	16	anniversary of the tragedy.

18	18	WHEREAS, in the early morning hours of April 22, 2018, the patrons and employees of
19	19	a Waffle House restaurant in the Antioch community were attacked, and four innocent people
20	20	lost their lives; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Akilah Dasilva, DeEbony Groves, Joe Perez, and Taurean Sanderlin were
22	22	fatally wounded during the tragic event; each of the four was under thirty years of age and had a
23	23	long, bright future ahead; and
24	24	WHEREAS, a student at Middle Tennessee State University, where he was pursuing a
25	25	degree in computer engineering, Akilah Dasilva was a "humble, kind, compassionate, outgoing,
26	26	and very creative" young man who possessed "a zeal for life" and was "a selfless friend" and a
27	27	beacon of hope; and
28	28	WHEREAS, formerly an exceptional student, star basketball player, and role model at
29	29	Gallatin High School, DeEbony Groves attended Belmont University, where she impressed her
30	30	peers and professors as a brilliant young woman with immense potential; and
31	31	WHEREAS, a native of Austin, Texas, Joe Perez worked as a subcontractor for a flood
32	32	relocation and logistics company; he had attended Jack C. Hays High School and possessed a
33	33	whimsical sense of humor; and
34	34	WHEREAS, a five-year employee of Waffle House who worked as a cook, Taurean
35	35	Sanderlin of Goodlettsville was renowned for his work ethic; his friendly demeanor earned him
36	36	the affection of the Antioch location's regular customers, who knew him as "T"; and

41	41	WHEREAS, sadly, these four fine young people were denied the opportunity to live and
42	42	excel as contributing members of our society, and it is fitting that we express our respect and
43	43	sorrow at the passing of Akilah Dasilva, DeEbony Groves, Joe Perez, and Taurean Sanderlin
44	44	who live on in the hearts and minds of their family, friends, and fellow Nashvillians; now,
45	45	therefore,
46	46	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
47	47	FOURTEENTH GE NERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
48	48	CONCURRING, that, on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the Waffle House Shooting
49	49	on April 22, 2018, we honor the memories of Akilah Dasilva, DeEbony Groves, Joe Perez, and
50	50	Taurean Sanderlin, four beloved members of the Nashville community who were taken from us
51	51	too soon.
52	52	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
53	53	for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
54	54	the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
55	55	without House or Senate designation.
