1312 AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 38;
1413 Title 39 and Title 40, relative to law enforcement

1716 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
1817 SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 38, Chapter 3, Part 1, is amended by
1918 adding the following new section:
2019 Beginning January 1, 2026, a law enforcement officer initiating a traffic stop or
2120 pedestrian stop must inform the person stopped of the reason for the stop before
2221 engaging the person in questioning related to an investigation of a possible criminal
2322 offense or traffic violation. The officer may withhold the information required by this
2423 section if the officer believes that doing so is necessary to protect life or property from an
2524 imminent threat.
2625 SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
