1212 AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 3 and
1313 Title 4, relative to days of special observance.

1515 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore is a community leader in Whitehaven, Tennessee, who has
1616 been called the "Mayor of Whitehaven." She has worked to improve the community in many
1717 ways, including fighting drugs and teen pregnancy, and promoting community pride; and
1818 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore founded the Academy of Youth Empowerment to help teens
1919 develop social skills and study habits, and led a drive to build a new library; and
2020 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore started the Community Health Fair, which provides free school
2121 supplies and health screenings for students and parents; and
2222 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore has been honored with the Pioneer Memphis Business Award
2323 (1996), the American Heart Association Outstanding Volunteer Award (1998, 2001), and the
2424 Black Business Association's Benny Award (2002); and
2525 WHEREAS, the Hazel Moore Award was created to honor her contributions to Memphis,
2626 and a street was dedicated in her name in honor of her contributions to the community; and
2727 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore's work has inspired others to care for their communities, and
2828 she is considered a catalyst for change in Whitehaven, Tennessee; now, therefore,
2929 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL AS SEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
3030 SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 4, Chapter 1, Part 4, is amended by
3131 adding the following as a new section:
3232 December 14 of each year is designated as "Hazel Moore Day."
3333 SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
