15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Hazel Moore is a community leader in Whitehaven, Tennessee, who has |
---|
16 | 16 | | been called the "Mayor of Whitehaven." She has worked to improve the community in many |
---|
17 | 17 | | ways, including fighting drugs and teen pregnancy, and promoting community pride; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Hazel Moore founded the Academy of Youth Empowerment to help teens |
---|
19 | 19 | | develop social skills and study habits, and led a drive to build a new library; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Hazel Moore started the Community Health Fair, which provides free school |
---|
21 | 21 | | supplies and health screenings for students and parents; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Hazel Moore has been honored with the Pioneer Memphis Business Award |
---|
23 | 23 | | (1996), the American Heart Association Outstanding Volunteer Award (1998, 2001), and the |
---|
24 | 24 | | Black Business Association's Benny Award (2002); and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, the Hazel Moore Award was created to honor her contributions to Memphis, |
---|
26 | 26 | | and a street was dedicated in her name in honor of her contributions to the community; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Hazel Moore's work has inspired others to care for their communities, and |
---|
28 | 28 | | she is considered a catalyst for change in Whitehaven, Tennessee; now, therefore, |
---|
29 | 29 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL AS SEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE: |

30 | 30 | | SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 4, Chapter 1, Part 4, is amended by |
---|
31 | 31 | | adding the following as a new section: |
---|
32 | 32 | | December 14 of each year is designated as "Hazel Moore Day." |
---|
33 | 33 | | SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it. |
