12	12	AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49,
13	13	relative to public schools.

15	15	BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
16	16	SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(1), is amended by
17	17	deleting "Teachers and employees of public schools and LEAs" and substituting instead
18	18	"Teachers, employees, and students of public schools and LEAs".
19	19	SECTION 2. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(1), is amended by
20	20	deleting "work" and substituting instead "work or school".
21	21	SECTION 3. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(2), is amended by
22	22	deleting "teachers and employees of public schools and LEAs" and substituting instead
23	23	"teachers, employees, and students of public schools and LEAs".
24	24	SECTION 4. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(3), is amended by
25	25	deleting "teachers and employees" and substituting instead "teachers, employees, and
26	26	students".
27	27	SECTION 5. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(a)(4), is amended by
28	28	deleting "teacher or employee" wherever it appears and substituting instead "teacher,
29	29	employee, or student".
30	30	SECTION 6. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(b), is amended by
31	31	deleting "A teacher or other employee of a public school or LEA" and substituting instead "A
32	32	teacher, employee, or student of a public school or LEA".
33	33	SECTION 7. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(b)(1), is amended by
34	34	deleting "a student's preferred pronoun" and substituting instead "the preferred pronoun of a
35	35	teacher, school employee, or student", deleting "the student" and substituting instead "the

40	40	teacher, school employee, or student", and deleting "the student's" and substituting instead "the
41	41	biological sex of the teacher, school employee, or student".
42	42	SECTION 8. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(b)(2), is amended by
43	43	adding the language "under the laws of this state" after the language "Civilly liable", deleting
44	44	"the student" and substituting instead "a teacher, school employee, or student", deleting
45	45	"teacher or employee" and substituting instead "teacher, school employee, or student", and
46	46	deleting "student's preferred pronoun" and substituting instead "preferred pronoun of the
47	47	teacher, school employee, or student".
48	48	SECTION 9. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(b)(3), is amended by
49	49	deleting "employment action" and substituting instead "employment or disciplinary action",
50	50	deleting "a student's preferred pronoun" and substituting instead "the preferred pronoun of a
51	51	teacher, school employee, or student", deleting "student's" wherever it appears in the
52	52	subdivision, and adding the following language after "biological sex":

54	54	SECTION 10. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-5102(c), is amended by
55	55	adding the language "under the laws of this state" after the language "civilly liable", deleting
56	56	"teacher or employee of the public school or LEA" and substituting instead "teacher, employee,
57	57	or student of the public school or LEA", deleting "a student" and substituting instead "a teacher,
58	58	school employee, or student", deleting "the student" and substituting instead "the teacher,
59	59	school employee, or student", deleting "the teacher or employee" and substituting instead "the
60	60	teacher, school employee, or student", deleting "student's", and adding the following language
61	61	after "preferred pronoun":
62	62	of the teacher, school employee, or student
63	63	SECTION 11. This act takes effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
