15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, we were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Sara "Lillian" Garrett |
---|
16 | 16 | | Bean of Knoxville; and |

17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Bean was an exemplary public servant and consummate professional |
---|
18 | 18 | | who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for her fellow citizens in numerous |
---|
19 | 19 | | capacities; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, originally from Rose Hill, Virginia, Mrs. Bean moved to Knoxville in 1961 |

21 | 21 | | after graduating from high school in order to study at National Business College, from which she |
---|
22 | 22 | | graduated in 1963; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Bean never forgot the hospitality shown to her by the YWCA, where |
---|
24 | 24 | | she stayed during her collegiate studies, and for some twenty-five years, she annually held |
---|
25 | 25 | | Chair parties for them with proceeds she earned from selling beans and cornbread, a so-called |
---|
26 | 26 | | "Bean Supper," at the Museum of Appalachia's Fall Festival; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Bean went on to serve her fellow citizens as clerk of the Knox County |
---|
28 | 28 | | Circuit, General Sessions, and Juvenile courts, an office she held for eighteen years; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, not content to only be active in government professionally, she was deeply |
---|
30 | 30 | | involved with the Republican Party of Knox County, in which she frequently performed in |
---|
31 | 31 | | positions of office; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Bean's impressive aptitude for leadership, a skill she undoubtedly |
---|
33 | 33 | | honed as a member of the Leadership Knoxville Class of 1996, was also exhibited in the |

34 | 34 | | Knoxville Women's Club, where she was a member for twenty-five years and served as |
---|

42 | 42 | | organizations: the Woman of the Year award three times by the Knoxville Women's Club, the |

43 | 43 | | Woman of the Year award once by the American Business Women's Association-Sunsphere |
---|
44 | 44 | | Chapter, the YWCA Tribute to Women award once by the YWCA, and the Republican |
---|
45 | 45 | | Officeholder of the Year award twice by the Republican Party of Knox County; and |
---|
46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, apart from her political and social endeavors, Mrs. Bean loved to coach her |
---|
47 | 47 | | children in Junior Pro basketball, and she also enjoyed watching her grandchildren's sporting |
---|
48 | 48 | | endeavors; and |

49 | 49 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Bean was not content to busy herself with the things of this world and |

50 | 50 | | often contemplated the next, being a member of Glenwood Baptist Church since 1968; and |

51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, she was also deeply devoted to her family and always endeavored to |

52 | 52 | | remain true to familial values of the highest order; and |

53 | 53 | | WHEREAS, Lillian Bean will be sadly mourned yet fondly remembered by her husband |

54 | 54 | | of fifty-six years, Richard L. Bean; her son, R. Garrett (Tammy) Bean; her daughters, Sara Lynn |

55 | 55 | | Bean and Rebecca Ann Bean (Larry) Headrick; her grandchildren, Samantha Bean, Savannah |

56 | 56 | | Sweat, Tommy Sweat, Olivia Headrick, and Wesley Headrick; and a multitude of cousins, |

58 | 58 | | WHEREAS, in addition to her parents, Mildred Hounshell and Fred Garrett, she was |
