12	12	A RESOLUTION to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Dolly
13	13	Parton's Imagination Library.

15	15	WHEREAS, in 1995, country music legend Dolly Parton founded the Imagination Library
16	16	in her native Sevier County, Tennessee, to fulfill her dream of helping children fall in love with
17	17	books and reading; and
18	18	WHEREAS, thirty years later, we are celebrating an innovative program that has
19	19	motivated thousands of children nationwide to identify as readers and build their own personal
20	20	library of books; and
21	21	WHEREAS, inspired by the memory of her father, whose reading skills were limited,
22	22	Dolly Parton launched Imagination Library by gifting age-appropriate books each month to
23	23	nearly 2,000 local children from birth to age five; and
24	24	WHEREAS, in 2004, then-Governor Phil Bredesen partnered with the Imagination
25	25	Library and expanded the program statewide; today, Imagination Library ships books to children
26	26	in all fifty states, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland; and
27	27	WHEREAS, more than 260 million books have been gifted by Imagination Library to
28	28	date, and the program continues to grow; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Dolly Parton has earned the affectionate sobriquet "The Book Lady" from a
30	30	legion of grateful young readers, and Imagination Library remains the brightest star in her
31	31	shining legacy of philanthropy; and
32	32	WHEREAS, her inspired efforts to promote children's literacy and education through
33	33	Imagination Library have reaped huge dividends, as a study has shown that children who are
34	34	participants of the program are better prepared for kindergarten and score significantly higher
35	35	on reading comprehension and vocabulary assessments; and

40	40	WHEREAS, Dolly Parton is one of our most beloved daughters, and through her
41	41	compassionate spirit and philanthropy, she has touched not only the lives of her fellow
42	42	Tennesseans, but also millions of lives around the world; and
43	43	WHEREAS, through Imagination Library, Dolly Parton has contributed greatly to
44	44	education and literacy by giving a truly great gift to thousands of children, a lifelong love of
45	45	reading; now, therefore,
46	46	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
47	47	GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF
48	48	REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Dolly
49	49	Parton's Imagination Library, a gift from the heart that continues to positively influence children
50	50	the world over, and thank Dolly Parton for this and her many other philanthropic contributions to
51	51	society, paying tribute to her generosity in helping others.
52	52	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
53	53	for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
54	54	the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
55	55	without House or Senate designation.
