A RESOLUTION to designate December 14 as "Hazel Moore 
Day." 
 
 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore is a community leader in Whitehaven, Tennessee, who has 
been called the "Mayor of Whitehaven."  She has worked to improve the community in many 
ways, including fighting drugs and teen pregnancy and promoting community pride; and 
 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore founded the Academy of Youth Empowerment to help teens 
develop social skills and study habits and led a drive to build a new library; and 
 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore started the Community Health Fair, which provides free school 
supplies and health screenings for students and parents; and 
 WHEREAS, Hazel Moore has been honored with the Pioneer Memphis Business Award 
(1996), the American Heart Association Outstanding Volunteer Award (1998, 2001), and the 
Black Business Association's Benny Award (2002); and 
WHEREAS, the Hazel Moore Award was created to honor her contributions to Memphis, 
and a street was dedicated in her name in honor of her contributions to the community; and  
WHEREAS, Hazel Moore's work has inspired others to care for their communities, and 
she is considered a catalyst for change in Whitehaven, Tennessee; now, therefore, 
 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEE NTH 
GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF 
REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that December 14 is designated "Hazel Moore Day" in 
honor of this devoted public servant and outstanding Tennessean.
