1212 A RESOLUTION to honor the Tennessee Federation of
1313 Republican Women on the occasion of the
1414 organization's seventieth anniversary.

1616 WHEREAS, Republican Women's clubs were formed many years before women
1717 received the right to vote; and
1818 WHEREAS, the Republican Platform of 1872 stated that The Republican Party is mindful
1919 of its obligation to the loyal women of America for their noble devotion to the cause of freedom;
2020 and
2121 WHEREAS, in 1938, Marion Martin, assistant chairman to the Republican National
2222 Committee, called a meeting at the Palmer House in Chicago, Illinois, to organize Republican
2323 Women's clubs into a National Organization; and
2424 WHEREAS, the National Federation of Republican Women's Clubs adopted rules, one
2525 of which was "to foster and encourage loyalty to the Republican Party and the ideals for which it
2626 stands"; and
2727 WHEREAS, at the time of the organization's founding, there were only six Republican
2828 governors, eighty-nine Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, and sixteen
2929 Republicans in the U.S. Senate; and
3030 WHEREAS, in its early days, the organization was a lobbying group that continued to
3131 grow, eventually changing its name to the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) in
3232 1953; and
3333 WHEREAS, the NFRW, once an auxiliary of the Republican National Committee,
3434 became financially and organizationally independent in 1952; and

3939 WHEREAS, in 1955, the Tennessee Federation of Republican Women was chartered,
4040 with Alice Elder of Chattanooga serving as its first president; and
4141 WHEREAS, Sharon Boreing is serving as president on this seventieth anniversary; and
4242 WHEREAS, the Tennessee Federation of Republican Women has clubs across the
4343 State that, in the seventy years since the state organization's founding, have taken part in
4444 programs to help in their communities, including those focused on caring for America, literacy,
4545 Americanism, armed services, and scholarship programs for women; most importantly, the
4646 organization has earned hundreds of thousands of campaign volunteer hours and received
4747 dozens of NFRW Achievement Awards in these areas; and
4848 WHEREAS, the Tennessee Federation of Republican Women is celebrating its
4949 seventieth year while still supporting candidates through the Iris Fund PAC, still campaigning for
5050 and electing Republicans in Tennessee, and still contributing to the success of growing a super
5151 majority; now, therefore,
5252 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
5353 GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF
5454 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURR ING, that we recognize the Tennessee Federation of
5555 Republican Women on the occasion of the organization's seventieth anniversary, extending our
5656 best wishes for every future success.
5757 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
5858 for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
5959 the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
6060 without House or Senate designation.
