1212 A RESOLUTION to commemorate the 250

1515 Battles of Lexington and Concord.

1717 WHEREAS, the Sons of the American Revolution are celebrating the 250
1818 th
1919 anniversary
2020 of the founding of America and have proclaimed 2023 to 2033 as the "Decade of the American
2121 Revolution"; and
2222 WHEREAS, on April 19, 2025, the nation will commemorate the 250
2323 th
2424 anniversary of the
2525 Battles of Lexington and Concord, the "Shot Heard Round the World," that began the
2626 Revolutionary War and united the colonies in the cause of liberty and independence; and
2727 WHEREAS, all cities, counties, and states are encouraged to join in this patriotic
2828 celebration to remember the sacrifices of all who supported the revolutionary cause and who
2929 participated in establishing the United States of America; and
3030 WHEREAS, in 1775, patriots in Massachusetts squared off against the British army to
3131 defend our freedoms when the British Commander General Thomas Gage ordered his troops to
3232 march to Concord and seize its arms; and
3333 WHEREAS, the British force marched through the night, and on the morning of April 19,
3434 1775, they arrived at Lexington Green, where they were met by a contingent of eighty Lexington
3535 militiamen, known as Minutemen, composed of local farmers, tradesmen, and citizens; and
3636 WHEREAS, it is unclear who fired the first shot, but a skirmish ensued, during which
3737 eight militia were killed and one British soldier wounded. After restoring order, the British
3838 resumed the march to Concord; and
3939 WHEREAS, militia from throughout the region converged to meet the British in a battle
4040 fought at Concord's North Bridge. As the British retreated for Boston, a running battle ensued in
4141 which ninety-five Patriots and 273 British were killed; and

4646 WHEREAS, the Battles of Lexington and Concord roused New Englanders to join forces
4747 and lay siege to Boston, showing that citizen soldiers could stand up to the British army and
4848 leading many formerly neutral colonists to support resistance; now, therefore,
4949 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
5050 GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF
5151 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that we join with the Sons of the American Revolution
5252 and other patriotic, community, and veterans' organizations on April 19, 2025, to commemorate
5353 the Battles of Lexington and Concord, important events in the history of our great country.
5454 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
5555 for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
5656 the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
5757 without House or Senate designation.
