12	12	A RESOLUTION to recognize and honor Ernest Burgess,
13	13	Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce 2024
14	14	Business Legend of the Year.

16	16	WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should recognize
17	17	those individuals whose vision, ambition, and work ethic are driving forces behind the success
18	18	of local economies and the economy of this State; and
19	19	WHEREAS, one such individual is Ernest Burgess of Rutherford County, a duly lauded
20	20	business leader and former mayor who has improved the economy of this State and the well-
21	21	being of its citizens in innumerable ways; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Mr. Burgess was recently named the 2024 Business Legend of the Year by
23	23	the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, an honor most befitting his indelible legacy; and
24	24	WHEREAS, a lifelong Rutherford Countian, Ernest Burgess earned degrees from Middle
25	25	Tennessee State University (MTSU) and the University of Tennessee, thereafter building a
26	26	distinguished career as Senior Vice President of Operations at National HealthCare Corporation
27	27	in Murfreesboro, in which role he played an integral part in the company's growth, particularly in
28	28	expanding healthcare services; and
29	29	WHEREAS, in 2006, he transitioned into public service when he was elected as the
30	30	Mayor of Rutherford County, holding that post until 2018; during his tenure, he oversaw
31	31	transformative changes in the county, including enhancements to the local school system,
32	32	construction of a state-of-the-art county judicial building, creation of a full-time county fire and
33	33	rescue department, and fostering an environment of economic growth, marked by low
34	34	unemployment rates; and

39	39	WHEREAS, a committed civic leader, Ernest Burgess has served on numerous local
40	40	boards, including those of the Discovery Center, Linebaugh Library, United Way, MTSU
41	41	Foundation, Doors of Hope, and Main Street Murfreesboro; and
42	42	WHEREAS, his vast record of community service has been honored with the Mindful
43	43	Care Adult Day Services Community Service Award, Robert E. Rose Community Service Award
44	44	from Journeys in Community Living, and Green House Ministries 12

46	46	Man Award; he was also
47	47	named the 2010 Statesman of the Year by the Tennessee Republican Party; and
48	48	WHEREAS, he has been an active member of North Boulevard Church of Christ, where
49	49	he previously served as an elder; and
50	50	WHEREAS, throughout his many worthy endeavors, Mr. Burgess has enjoyed the love
51	51	and support of his wife, Peggy, and their three children, five grandchildren, and three great-
52	52	grandchildren; and
53	53	WHEREAS, Ernest Burgess has devoted his life to serving the citizens of Rutherford
54	54	County, and it is most fitting that he be recognized at this time; now, therefore,
55	55	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
56	56	GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF
57	57	REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that we recognize and honor Ernest Burgess, Rutherford
58	58	County Chamber of Commerce 2024 Business Legend of the Year, extending our best wishes
59	59	for every continued success.
60	60	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
61	61	for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
62	62	the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear
63	63	without House or Senate designation.
