1212 A RESOLUTION to honor and congratulate Dr. Priscilla Davis on
1313 the celebration of her eightieth birthday.

1515 WHEREAS, it is fitting that we pay tribute to those citizens who are celebrating special
1616 occasions in their estimable lives; and
1717 WHEREAS, Dr. Priscilla Davis will celebrate her eightieth birthday this year, a milestone
1818 that will be commemorated as yet another precious souvenir of life's rich pageant; and
1919 WHEREAS, Dr. Davis, at the age of only nine, demonstrated fearless courage and
2020 perseverance in her fight with polio, even after her doctors told her that she would be unable to
2121 use her right arm for the rest of her life; she struggled through recuperation without a physical
2222 therapist due to segregation, and she managed to make a complete recovery and go on to live
2323 an active life; and
2424 WHEREAS, she studied at both the University of Buffalo and Buffalo State University,
2525 earning her doctorate in communicative disorders, and went on to teach for over thirty years
2626 combined at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Arkansas for Medical
2727 Sciences; and
2828 WHEREAS, a tireless advocate and laborer for those who experience auditory or
2929 linguistic difficulties, Dr. Davis was a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing
3030 Association for forty-five years; and
3131 WHEREAS, she moved to teach at the University of Alabama, where she, for over a
3232 decade, enlightened her students in such subjects as speech development, articulation
3333 disorders, multicultural issues, diagnostics, and phonetics; and

3838 WHEREAS, Dr. Davis exhibited her aptitude for effective leadership at the University of
3939 Alabama as a member of the Faculty Senate, the chairman of the Promotion and Tenure
4040 Committee, and the president of the Black Faculty and Staff Association; and
4141 WHEREAS, committed to racial equality on campus and beyond, she served as the
4242 faculty advisor to the NAACP; and
4343 WHEREAS, as she enters her eightieth year, Dr. Davis, admired for her wisdom, spirit of
4444 generosity, integrity, and enthusiasm for life, still exudes the goodness that is so
4545 characteristically hers; and
4646 WHEREAS, we wish to grasp this golden opportunity to specially recognize one of
4747 Tennessee's most outstanding citizens on this very special occasion; now, therefore,
4848 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
4949 GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, that we hereby honor and
5050 congratulate Dr. Priscilla Davis on the celebration of her eightieth birthday and extend to her our
5151 best wishes for many happy returns of the day.
5252 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
