1212 A RESOLUTION to affirm that the American Dream belongs to all
1313 of us.
1414
1515 WHEREAS, the American Dream has been a beacon of hope for generations; and
1616 WHEREAS, the American Dream embodies the ideals of opportunity, prosperity, and
1717 upward mobility, promising that every person should have the chance to achieve what they
1818 themselves define as success and fulfillment through hard work and determination; and
1919 WHEREAS, many today feel as though their American Dream is unattainable; and
2020 WHEREAS, the American Dream belongs to all of us, not just billionaires and multi-
2121 millionaires; and
2222 WHEREAS, our highest accomplishments as a state and nation have been achieved
2323 when we have harnessed the strengths of all people, regardless of their identities, to overcome
2424 our greatest challenges; and
2525 WHEREAS, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is a centuries-old movement deeply
2626 rooted in America's founding principles and its subsequent legacy of civil rights and social
2727 justice efforts aimed at delivering the laws, policies, and initiatives that enable America to live up
2828 to our Constitution's promises; and
2929 WHEREAS, DEI policies, from the 19
3030 th
3131 Amendment to the 1964 Civil Rights Act to the
3232 Americans with Disabilities Act, among others, reflect the corrective legislative and legal actions
3333 taken across our nation's history to expand and guarantee access to the educational, economic,
3434 and civic obligations and capacities of our nation; and
3535 WHEREAS, DEI principles and policies promote equal access to opportunities, foster an
3636 environment of respect and belonging, and ensure that every individual, regardless of
3737 background, can fully participate in all aspects of society; and

4141
4242 WHEREAS, DEI is essential to creating a society where all individuals are valued, heard,
4343 and included; and
4444 WHEREAS, DEI is based on removing barriers to opportunity so that our merits can
4545 speak for themselves; and
4646 WHEREAS, DEI is committed to widening pathways to the American Dream for every
4747 community so that all people can reap the benefits of shared prosperity in our nation; and
4848 WHEREAS, freedom of speech and expression are fundamental constitutional rights,
4949 protecting the ability of individuals to voice their ideas and opinions without interference,
5050 punishment, or retaliation by the government; and
5151 WHEREAS, anti-DEI activists, politicians, and corporate decision-makers who attempt to
5252 prohibit DEI infringe upon the right of individuals to freely express themselves, diminish the
5353 diversity of perspectives that strengthen our society, and bring themselves into conflict with anti-
5454 discrimination laws; and
5555 WHEREAS, efforts to attack DEI are harmful to the bottom line and health of our
5656 economy; now, therefore,
5757 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
5858 GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, that the State of Tennessee affirms
5959 its commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as an essential foundation for achieving the
6060 American Dream and fostering environments where all individuals have the freedom to be
6161 healthy, prosperous, and safe and the opportunity to realize their full potential.
6262 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the State of Tennessee encourages local, state, and
6363 federal policymakers, educational institutions, workplaces, and other organizations to adopt and
6464 uphold DEI principles that promote inclusivity, protect freedom of expression, remove barriers,
6565 and provide equitable opportunities for all individuals to pursue their dreams.
