12	12	A RESOLUTION to affirm that the American Dream belongs to all
13	13	of us.

15	15	WHEREAS, the American Dream has been a beacon of hope for generations; and
16	16	WHEREAS, the American Dream embodies the ideals of opportunity, prosperity, and
17	17	upward mobility, promising that every person should have the chance to achieve what they
18	18	themselves define as success and fulfillment through hard work and determination; and
19	19	WHEREAS, many today feel as though their American Dream is unattainable; and
20	20	WHEREAS, the American Dream belongs to all of us, not just billionaires and multi-
21	21	millionaires; and
22	22	WHEREAS, our highest accomplishments as a state and nation have been achieved
23	23	when we have harnessed the strengths of all people, regardless of their identities, to overcome
24	24	our greatest challenges; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is a centuries-old movement deeply
26	26	rooted in America's founding principles and its subsequent legacy of civil rights and social
27	27	justice efforts aimed at delivering the laws, policies, and initiatives that enable America to live up
28	28	to our Constitution's promises; and
29	29	WHEREAS, DEI policies, from the 19

31	31	Amendment to the 1964 Civil Rights Act to the
32	32	Americans with Disabilities Act, among others, reflect the corrective legislative and legal actions
33	33	taken across our nation's history to expand and guarantee access to the educational, economic,
34	34	and civic obligations and capacities of our nation; and
35	35	WHEREAS, DEI principles and policies promote equal access to opportunities, foster an
36	36	environment of respect and belonging, and ensure that every individual, regardless of
37	37	background, can fully participate in all aspects of society; and

42	42	WHEREAS, DEI is essential to creating a society where all individuals are valued, heard,
43	43	and included; and
44	44	WHEREAS, DEI is based on removing barriers to opportunity so that our merits can
45	45	speak for themselves; and
46	46	WHEREAS, DEI is committed to widening pathways to the American Dream for every
47	47	community so that all people can reap the benefits of shared prosperity in our nation; and
48	48	WHEREAS, freedom of speech and expression are fundamental constitutional rights,
49	49	protecting the ability of individuals to voice their ideas and opinions without interference,
50	50	punishment, or retaliation by the government; and
51	51	WHEREAS, anti-DEI activists, politicians, and corporate decision-makers who attempt to
52	52	prohibit DEI infringe upon the right of individuals to freely express themselves, diminish the
53	53	diversity of perspectives that strengthen our society, and bring themselves into conflict with anti-
54	54	discrimination laws; and
55	55	WHEREAS, efforts to attack DEI are harmful to the bottom line and health of our
56	56	economy; now, therefore,
57	57	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
58	58	GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, that the State of Tennessee affirms
59	59	its commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as an essential foundation for achieving the
60	60	American Dream and fostering environments where all individuals have the freedom to be
61	61	healthy, prosperous, and safe and the opportunity to realize their full potential.
62	62	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the State of Tennessee encourages local, state, and
63	63	federal policymakers, educational institutions, workplaces, and other organizations to adopt and
64	64	uphold DEI principles that promote inclusivity, protect freedom of expression, remove barriers,
65	65	and provide equitable opportunities for all individuals to pursue their dreams.
