15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, the members of this legislative body were greatly saddened to learn of the |

16 | 16 | | passing of Patricia Ann Jones Murphy of Memphis; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Patricia Murphy was an exemplary public servant and consummate |
---|
18 | 18 | | professional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for her fellow citizens in |
---|
19 | 19 | | numerous capacities; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, born in Memphis on September 8, 1947, Mrs. Murphy was the daughter of |
---|
21 | 21 | | Joe S. and Bertha Jones; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Patricia Murphy attended Lane College in Jackson, where she became a |
---|
23 | 23 | | member of the Beta Chi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and served as a member of |
---|
24 | 24 | | the drill team, the yearbook staff, the Pan Hellenic Council, the Cleaves Hall Senate, and the |
---|
25 | 25 | | CYF committee; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, she became a Golden Life member of the Memphis Alumnae Chapter of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and was recognized as Delta of the Year in 2000; she served |
---|
28 | 28 | | her chapter in numerous capacities, including as chair, financial secretary, treasurer, sergeant- |
---|
29 | 29 | | at-arms, and as a member of several committees. She ultimately served as vice president and |
---|
30 | 30 | | then as president from 2006 to 2008; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, in her professional career, Mrs. Murphy served the Tate County Public |
---|
32 | 32 | | School System, the Golden Circle Insurance Company, and the Shelby County Health |
---|
33 | 33 | | Department in several roles, earning the respect and admiration of her peers and community |
---|
34 | 34 | | alike for the superior quality of her work; and |
---|

42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, in addition to her NAACP membership, Mrs. Murphy was a faithful member |

43 | 43 | | and past Worthy Matron of Eureka Chapter #241, Order of the Eastern Star, Tennessee |

44 | 44 | | Jurisdictions PHA, and a charter member of the Memphis/Shelby County Section of the National |
---|
45 | 45 | | Council of Negro Women; and |

46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Murphy professed her faith in Christ at a young age and joined Martin |

47 | 47 | | Memorial Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; she later became a member at First |

48 | 48 | | Baptist Church Lauderdale, where she served the Missionary Society, the Crusaders Club and |
---|
49 | 49 | | Choir, the Anniversary Year Steering Committee, the Red Circle Girls, and Youth Encampment; |
---|

51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, she was also deeply devoted to her family, and she always endeavored to |

52 | 52 | | remain true to family values of the highest order; and |

53 | 53 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Murphy will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her beloved |

54 | 54 | | husband of fifty-seven years, Dennis Murphy, Sr.; her daughter, Tamala Murphy-Johnson |

55 | 55 | | (Lloyd); her son, Dennis (Bridgette) Murphy, Jr.; her sister, Joan Jones Harvey; seven |

56 | 56 | | grandchildren; her great-grandson; her godmother, Nettie Martel Givhan; and a host of relatives |
