15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, the members of this legislative body were greatly saddened to learn of the |

16 | 16 | | passing of Grace Bolton Freeman; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Grace Freeman was an exemplary public servant and consummate |
---|
18 | 18 | | professional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for her fellow citizens in |
---|
19 | 19 | | numerous capacities; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, born on December 20, 1932, in Pontotoc, Mississippi, Grace Olivia Bolton |
---|
21 | 21 | | Freeman was the daughter of Richard Bolton and Carrie Pinson Bolton; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Grace Freeman was educated in the Pontotoc school system, where she |
---|
23 | 23 | | excelled academically, and graduated from Pontotoc Colored High School before continuing her |
---|
24 | 24 | | studies at Mississippi Industrial College (MIC) in Holly Springs, Mississippi; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, at MIC, she played basketball and was elected Homecoming Queen before |
---|
26 | 26 | | receiving her undergraduate degree in elementary education and embarking on a career as an |
---|
27 | 27 | | educator in the Pontotoc County School System; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, in 1957, she met and married the love of her life, Wiley H. Freeman, and the |
---|
29 | 29 | | couple relocated to Memphis, where Mrs. Freeman served as a teacher with Memphis City |
---|
30 | 30 | | Schools; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, entering the banking industry, Grace Freeman enjoyed a long and storied |
---|
32 | 32 | | career as a highly respected banking officer with Union Planters National Bank, where she |
---|
33 | 33 | | remained a dedicated officer until her retirement in 1986; and |

38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, she was a longtime member of Mt. |

41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, she had a passion for gardening, especially growing tomatoes, okra, and |

42 | 42 | | peppers, and found great joy in baking; she was known far and wide for her delicious cakes; |

44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Freeman was also deeply devoted to her family, and she always |

45 | 45 | | endeavored to remain true to family values of the highest order; and |

46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Freeman was the proud mother of Richard U. Freeman, Sedgwick |
---|
47 | 47 | | (Wendy) Freeman, Whitney Freeman, Carole Woodard, and Mary Freeman, the loving |

48 | 48 | | grandmother of Dr. Jonathan Freeman, Cordell Gray, Loren Freeman, Zachary (Hydeia) |

49 | 49 | | Freeman, and Marcus (Rebecca) Woodard, and the great-grandmother of six great- |

50 | 50 | | grandchildren; and |

51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, she will be sadly mourned but fondly remembered by her sister-in-law, |

52 | 52 | | Ludean Freeman, and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear |

54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, in addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Freeman was preceded in |

55 | 55 | | death by her brother, Richard Bolton, Jr.; and |

56 | 56 | | WHEREAS, Grace Freeman leaves behind an indelible legacy of integrity and probity in |

57 | 57 | | public life, compassion and loyalty in private life, and diligence and dedication in all her chosen |

59 | 59 | | WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this legislative body should pause to |

60 | 60 | | remember the bountiful life of this exceptional public servant and human being; now, therefore, |
