1212 A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of Grace Bolton Freeman
1313 of Memphis.

1515 WHEREAS, the members of this legislative body were greatly saddened to learn of the
1616 passing of Grace Bolton Freeman; and
1717 WHEREAS, Grace Freeman was an exemplary public servant and consummate
1818 professional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for her fellow citizens in
1919 numerous capacities; and
2020 WHEREAS, born on December 20, 1932, in Pontotoc, Mississippi, Grace Olivia Bolton
2121 Freeman was the daughter of Richard Bolton and Carrie Pinson Bolton; and
2222 WHEREAS, Grace Freeman was educated in the Pontotoc school system, where she
2323 excelled academically, and graduated from Pontotoc Colored High School before continuing her
2424 studies at Mississippi Industrial College (MIC) in Holly Springs, Mississippi; and
2525 WHEREAS, at MIC, she played basketball and was elected Homecoming Queen before
2626 receiving her undergraduate degree in elementary education and embarking on a career as an
2727 educator in the Pontotoc County School System; and
2828 WHEREAS, in 1957, she met and married the love of her life, Wiley H. Freeman, and the
2929 couple relocated to Memphis, where Mrs. Freeman served as a teacher with Memphis City
3030 Schools; and
3131 WHEREAS, entering the banking industry, Grace Freeman enjoyed a long and storied
3232 career as a highly respected banking officer with Union Planters National Bank, where she
3333 remained a dedicated officer until her retirement in 1986; and

3838 WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, she was a longtime member of Mt.
3939 Pisgah C.M.E. Church, where she served as a member of Usher Board #1 and the Mary Becton
4040 Missionary Society; and
4141 WHEREAS, she had a passion for gardening, especially growing tomatoes, okra, and
4242 peppers, and found great joy in baking; she was known far and wide for her delicious cakes;
4343 and
4444 WHEREAS, Mrs. Freeman was also deeply devoted to her family, and she always
4545 endeavored to remain true to family values of the highest order; and
4646 WHEREAS, Mrs. Freeman was the proud mother of Richard U. Freeman, Sedgwick
4747 (Wendy) Freeman, Whitney Freeman, Carole Woodard, and Mary Freeman, the loving
4848 grandmother of Dr. Jonathan Freeman, Cordell Gray, Loren Freeman, Zachary (Hydeia)
4949 Freeman, and Marcus (Rebecca) Woodard, and the great-grandmother of six great-
5050 grandchildren; and
5151 WHEREAS, she will be sadly mourned but fondly remembered by her sister-in-law,
5252 Ludean Freeman, and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear
5353 friends; and
5454 WHEREAS, in addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Freeman was preceded in
5555 death by her brother, Richard Bolton, Jr.; and
5656 WHEREAS, Grace Freeman leaves behind an indelible legacy of integrity and probity in
5757 public life, compassion and loyalty in private life, and diligence and dedication in all her chosen
5858 endeavors; and
5959 WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this legislative body should pause to
6060 remember the bountiful life of this exceptional public servant and human being; now, therefore,
6161 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
6262 GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, that we honor the memory of Grace

6767 Bolton Freeman, reflecting fondly upon her impeccable character and her stalwart commitment
6868 to living the examined life with courage and conviction.
6969 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and offer our condolences
