12	12	A RESOLUTION to honor the members and leaders of the
13	13	Tennessee Cluster and the South Eastern
14	14	Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

16	16	WHEREAS, we are pleased to recognize those estimable organizations that, through
17	17	their unflagging commitment and unwavering dedication to the highest tenets of community
18	18	service, enrich the lives of the citizens of this State; and
19	19	WHEREAS, founded at Howard University in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) is the
20	20	oldest Greek-letter organization founded by college-educated African-American women; this
21	21	international service organization of more than 325,000 initiated members has been a trailblazer
22	22	in empowering women, fostering sisterhood, and making impactful contributions to communities
23	23	around the globe; and
24	24	WHEREAS, the South Eastern Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha includes the states of
25	25	Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, with more than 118 undergraduate and graduate
26	26	chapters and over 14,000 active members who are dedicated to the mission of their illustrious
27	27	organization; and
28	28	WHEREAS, the story of the South Eastern Region began when the Pi Chapter was
29	29	chartered at Meharry Medical College in Nashville on April 6, 1921, making it the oldest
30	30	undergraduate chapter in the region; the chapter transferred to Fisk University in 1927; and
31	31	WHEREAS, initially a member of the Southern Region, which included all chapters in the
32	32	southeast, the Pi Chapter was made part of the South Eastern Region in 1932, with the member
33	33	states at that time being Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas,
34	34	Georgia, and Florida; and

39	39	WHEREAS, with continued growth, the South Eastern Region was realigned to its
40	40	current three-state configuration in 1962; the Tennessee Cluster of the region continued to grow
41	41	as well, and its current membership totals thirty-three chapters across the Volunteer State's
42	42	three Grand Divisions; and
43	43	WHEREAS, the South Eastern Region is currently led by Director Tracey Morant
44	44	Adams, Ph.D., who has ably steered the region toward continued, unparalleled success, ever
45	45	furthering the mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha along with her sorors from Tennessee, Mississippi,
46	46	and Alabama; and
47	47	WHEREAS, it is most fitting that we recognize the exceptional women of Alpha Kappa
48	48	Alpha's South Eastern Region and Tennessee Cluster; now, therefore,
49	49	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
50	50	GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, that we recognize the members and
51	51	leaders of the Tennessee Cluster and the South Eastern Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
52	52	Inc., extending our best wishes for their continued success.
53	53	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
54	54	for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy.
