12	12	A RESOLUTION to recognize and commemorate Honor Our
13	13	Great Smoky Mountain Veterans Day on June
14	14	14, 2025.

16	16	WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women who have served in
17	17	the U.S. Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining our freedoms and way of life; and
18	18	WHEREAS, we will never forget the sacrifices these men and women made for our
19	19	country, including the ultimate sacrifice in many cases; and
20	20	WHEREAS, our veterans are brave and selfless individuals who, when duty called,
21	21	willingly put themselves in harm's way to defend the lives and liberty of others; their abiding
22	22	patriotism and enduring devotion to the ideals on which the United States was founded never
23	23	fails to inspire; and
24	24	WHEREAS, tens of millions of Americans have served in the Armed Forces of the
25	25	United States from the American Revolution to the present; many of those veterans chose to
26	26	settle and start their families in East Tennessee, and many of them forfeited their land to found
27	27	one of the best national parks in the United States; and
28	28	WHEREAS, on June 14, 2025, Veterans Heritage Site Foundation (VHSF) will host
29	29	Honor Our Great Smoky Mountain Veterans Day to honor the more than 249 veterans who are
30	30	buried at more than sixty-five sites within Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP); and
31	31	WHEREAS, this year's event will specifically honor War of 1812 veterans who are buried
32	32	within GSMNP and surrounding cemeteries and their descendants; and
33	33	WHEREAS, nine War of 1812 veterans are buried in the park, including Peter Cable,
34	34	John Calhoun, Hugh Ghormley, James Greet, John Mingus, John Oliver, John Ownby, William
35	35	Threntham, and William Whaley; and

40	40	WHEREAS, on this special day, VHSF, honored guests, speakers, and other attendees
41	41	will pay homage to two additional events celebrated on June 14, 2025, namely the 250
42	42	th

44	44	anniversary of the U.S. Army and Flag Day; and
45	45	WHEREAS, we are most grateful to VHSF and the Tennessee chapters of the
46	46	Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society United States Daughters of
47	47	1812 for their commitment to honoring GSMNP veterans on this day and every day; now,
48	48	therefore,
49	49	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
50	50	GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, that we recognize and
51	51	commemorate Honor Our Great Smoky Mountain Veterans Day on June 14, 2025, and honor
52	52	the military service of Great Smoky Mountains National Park veterans from all conflicts.
53	53	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared
54	54	for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy.
